I recently bought a 1989 C4 and there's a button on the dash I can't quite figure out. It's press-able and rotates about 135 degrees, with a "click" at the very beginning of the rotation. It kind of reminds me of the Valentine One dial, but there's no hard wiring present that I can discern. Near the fuse-box, there's a Green and Brown cable harness labelled "54" which is disconnected - not sure if that relates to the button or not. Here's a picture to show what I'm talking about:

Volume pot for a vintage K40 installation?
Take a look underneath the front & rear of the car for small black boxes about the size of a pack of cigarettes.

I've got a similar **** in the same location (though on the vertical surface right below it) that controls my K40 installation. Like was said above, check out your bumpers for the sensors, and your dash for two tiny red LEDs somewhere...

I can't seem to find any LEDs, but there is a small cigarette-box-sized box labelled "ANTENNA" upside-down behind the driver's side front grill. There's also a tiny speaker under the steering wheel. I haven't heard it make a peep, though.

Even it they still work, vintage radar detectors are mostly good for finding cell phone towers and liquor stores (burgler alarms set them off). Mine had a dealer-installed Porsche brand radar detector when I bought it. I alarmed for speed traps but gave more false alarms than chicken little.

Interesting. My K40 of unknown vintage (prior to 1999 at least) has a 'city' mode that filters out all X-band (burglar alarms, etc.) signals. Works fairly well.
If yours is a K40, it may have the same capability.

I have a K40 in mine that came from PO. It works pretty well for me. The **** for mine was placed on the other side of the steering wheel, right near the clock.

My "Porsche" branded detector looked idnetical to a K-40 except for the brand name. Mine did not have the volume control ****, or else it is hidden and I have not located it.
It did have the mode switch for "city", but in Atlanta the interference was too much. Out in the countryside it was OK, but still seemed to find each cell tower. It was installed in 1992 when the car was new, and almost certainly was designed before there were cell phones.
