Jim - You might be right. If that's the case, then my question still remains: can this be removed and left off or will doing so cause some heat or other damage?

Personal choice. My view usually is "the Porsche engineers seemed to think it was a good idea, who am I to disagree?".

Cat gets pretty hot, so may be good to keep it. Do you have the plastic/foil covered shield that would hold the undertray? I do not have that anymore, so I keep the heat shield on the cat.

I keept mine in place. Don't want to bake the plug wires and lower valve cover ! That Cat can get very hot !
