Default 964RS Steering wheel? Or is it?

I have what appears to be a 964RS steering wheel i.e. 4 spoke, 360mm diameter with RS embossed on the horn push, but the part numbers don't make any sense.

The part number for the wheel is 944 347 084 09 and the horn push is 944 347 859 05 . My friend, an independent porsche workshop owner, has checked out the numbers on the latest Porsche system. The wheel number only shows on the 944 section of PET ( sports wheel ) and was superceded in '91 by a 928 number. The horn push number doen't come up as anything at all!

As far as I know there were only ever 911 RS variants; no 944 or 928. Is there some mystery car that this wheel belongs to that I am unaware of? I was going to sell it on as a 964RS wheel, but having checked the numbers, wouldn't want to miss-sell it.

No real suprprise. The small diameter wheel had many numbers depending on which car it was mounted. As long as the splines are correct for the 964 and the horn pad is embossed with the RS logo, it is reasonably an RS Wheel.

The steering wheel part number is 944.347.084.09 (10OVERL) which is stamped on the metal face which is under the horn pad.

The RS horn pad actually has 2 part numbers on it's back face - 944.347.859.03 on the left and 944.347.859.05 with a horn symbol on the right.

How much would you be asking for the wheel and what condition is it in? I might be interested in buying it.

Thanks guys, I knew you would know the answer. Yes Rich, it has (10OVERL) stamped after the code and the two numbers plus horn on the back of the pad. You have saved me from a lot of head scratching. I was going to fit it to my car, but firstly I have a C4, so it would be out of place and secondly I like my CS wheel with newly fitted hub extension. Not sure on price - I was going to Ebay it. PM sent Rich.

PS Bill, I think that is the part number that superceded that on the wheel I have and now shows on PET for the RS. Threw me, as I thought the 928 had a different spline to the 944 and 964.

Will any 10VERL wheel fit a 964? How do you install it on an airbag equipped 964?

It will fit a 944. Have you got an image of the wheel itself? The 944 wheel is smaller than the standard 964 wheel. If you think it's a 964 RS wheel it will have the RS pad. Images of all the parts will confirm.

Edit: just checked PET and none of the steering wheels are 944 part numbers. There are 964, 928 and 968 versions.

The 10verl is 363mm. The same wheel was used on the 964rs and was a sport wheel option on late 944's. Only the horn pad is specific to the rs. It's the best 964 wheel in my opinion.

I don't have a horse in this race but I'm interested to know why PET lists different numbers

I just bought a used "standard" 4-spoke wheel in really good condition for my C2 -90 to replace my original faded blue steering wheel on the shelf.
Unpacking the "new" wheel yesterday i found it to be slightly smaller, thicker and made with seemingly better quality leather. Its about 100 times nicer than the steering wheel my car came with!
Yes, it turns out to be this RS/944 sport wheel (10VERL).
Out with the Prototipo, this one goes in the car NOW!
Happy! :-)
