Default WANTED: OEM 40/60 or 40/40 LSD to suit 964C2.

Afhter much deliberation on whether to get an aftermarket carbonetic/KAAZ diff etc, I have decided to get a factory LSD instead.
Anybody have an LSD lying about they wish to offload or know where would be the best place to source one.
I have also been led to believe that any GT3 LSD will slot in as well.

I have been belting around the track with an open diff for two seasons now and I a pretty convinced an LSD is probably worth around a second a lap.

Cheers

Hi,

JMHO, but I'd not recommend installing one of those 2-plate factory LSD's due to their high wear rates. Under track usage, they don't last long at all. Given the labor required to do this, its hardly worth the effort.

I'd strongly recommend:

1) Guard GT LSD

2) OS Giken LSD

3) Porsche Motorsports (4-plate)

I have looked at aftermarket LSD and was unsure as I didn't want too much lock giving me turn in understeer and I don't want a noisy LSD like a Kaaz as I use this car for street.
Track use would be timed sprints and hillclimbs.
Most of the club level guys here use the factory ones and as far as I am aware they don't need to regularly rebuild them
Perhaps it is because we do maybe 5 sessions of 4-5 timed laps ie 20 laps.
We do ten events a year so that's really only 200 laps or 1000kms/year max....
I looked at a carbonetic 1.5 way. I believe they are quite god but not as noisy as other plate LSD's.

Jim

The locally made Modena unit might be worth a look as well.

I have one in my early car and love it. No understeer issues and additional stability under braking. I'm pretty sure these are re-branded and sold in large numbers in the US.

I'm not 100% sure they make one for a G50 but worth a look.

Let me know if you need a source in Oz

Cheers

Cam

PS I have a hankering for a 964!!

Interested in this topic as I am about to go through my transmission.

I was initially thinking about installing a OS Giken superlock (Guard is the best but out of budget) but then my mechanic told me that the OEM unit on the earlier models (964, 993) is not bad at all and we could refurbish and use that with good results.

What's rennlist's experience on this?

Thanks

Curious about the "noisey" comment regarding Kaaz units. I've installed a bunch and not heard that from my customers. I've also found the replacement plates for factory GK units seem to hold up much better than the originals.
Unless you're a serious racer who's going to dial an LSD for whatever track you're running I think you'll find that any functioning LSD will give you 90%+ of the best tuned one.
And that is a world of difference versus an open diff.

I am looking for an LSD that can lock both ways and does not need to be rebuilt every 10.000 miles.

Seeing how quickly the OEM 997 GT3 LSDs lose functionality I was leaning towards a OS Giken unit. Then my mechanic told me that the OEM G50 LSD should be fine. What's everyone's experience on OEM LSD?

I guess they are so rare on 964s that not too many will chime in...

I have a factory 964 G50 LSD on my 964. It's functional, but, it feels 'lightly' functional. I don't spin tires on tight turn acceleration but it doesn't feel like I have the lsd grip I'd expect, and on hard braking I get some tail wag but not as much as I'd expect with an open diff. Meaning, for track use I'd want stronger lockup on decel and accel.

I plan to replace mine with a Guard unit vs. a rebuild.

Thanks for the feedback Spyerx.

Is it possible to make the OEM diff to lock more?

You'd have to rebuild with new ramps and plates. At that point cost-wise you're not going to be far off a new unit, and well, a Guard unit is like a work of art, fully rebuildable, and will last a LONG time.

I don't think Matt makes rebuilds for these (correct me if I'm wrong) anymore.

Thanks.
I think I will stock with the OS Giken then - mainly for budget purposes.
