Default Bilstein HD & Reds pictures with Questions - Now Even More Questions

Car is a 93 C2. Bilstein part numbers are F4-VE3-5277-H2, F4-VE3-5278-H2, and F4-B46-1547-H1. The old struts are still on the car, but I tried to bench assemble one front and one rear to see how parts match. On the front strut, the concave washer(above the spring) and the supporting mounts (on top) do not go over the threads and I did not want to force them. The washers shown by the bump stop do not fit over the shaft on the rear struts. I have attached a link to PET. The relevant illustraions for parts to assemble struts are 402-00 and 502-00 in front and rear axle sections.

I know that I need the concave washer (#4 in 402-00) and support mount (#2 in 402-00). The question is has anyone else had this problem and would it work when I compress the springs to assemble?

For the rears, do I need the washers (#5 and 7 in 502-00) and the bump stop (#6 in 502-00).

Hey Nader, my part numbers ended in 5277-HO and 5278-HO i had no problem sliding down the washers and support mount onto the shock shaft threading. I looked on tire rack and for a 1993 c2 it shows part numbers that end in HO as well. You sure you have the right shocks???

These are the shocks i bought
F4-VE3-5277-H0
F4-VE3-5278-H0
F4-B46-1547-H0

It shows the same on tirerack for a 93 C2

Im not sure what the H2 designates.

I checked the concave washer and support mount in Pet and they are the same part number for a 1991 and 1993.

On the Rears i did not have #5 washer when i dissasembled so i didnt use it if i remember correctly but you do need #7. And yes you can use the bump stop on the rear because it holds the dust cover on. Some people say you dont need it however.

I just measured the diameter of the threaded portion of my old front shocks and that was 14mm if that helps you.

Jerry,

Thanks for all the help. Wrong schocks were in the back of my mind. I will check with TireRack, as that is where I bought them.

I have a call into the technical guy at Bilstein. In my earlier call to Bilstein, I was told that the Bilstein part numbers that include 5277 and 5278 are for cars built before 9/93. Cars built after that date require part numbers B648 and B649. Bilstein site shows that both of these parts #s are 36mm monotube struts. Has anyone else had this issue?

I fitted Bilsteins with M030 springs over 18 months ago. The part numbers for the Bilsteins were as follows:
Rears 46-1547
Front left v36-0384
Right front v36-0385

I'm almost certain that the thread on each strut was an M12!!

Hope this helps

I determined that I have the correct shocks based on the car's build date of 6/92. The problem may simply be that I do not know how far down the shaft should the piecees fit. The next step is to take the current shocks off the car and disassemble to see if the Bilsteins work with shock mounts and other pieces that are currently on the car.

Plan to document and post a step-by-step DIY.
