ANOTHER Powder coating valve covers thread
I have taken my valve covers off for powder coating as they have flaking paint work.
I know the whole story with magnesium etc the powder coater I am using is specialist with regards to magnesium he will out gas the valve covers then apply the coating while they are hot
also he will not subject the covers to thermal shock in the cooling down process.
before powder coating he will use a gentle abrasive to shot blast the covers inside and out as the paint is flaking inside the covers as well..
My question is this why do we not powder coat the inside of the valve covers ?
The powder coater reckons the original gold type paint finish is originally powder coat from porsche ? I know magnesium corrodes and I am worried about paint flaking off the inside of the engine and getting in the oil ..
However I also know shot blasting the inside of the covers to remove this old flaky paint gives me another problem.
1) The bare metal inside the covers does not all see oil some pockets stay dry ? Now if i leave the metal bare and dont powder coat that area any natural moisture that gets in that area will increase the on set of rust inside the valve covers very quickly as they will be bare shot blasted nakied metal with no protective covering ? No one want to cover the inside because they feel the finish might break loose and up in their oil channels ?
has any body powder coated both sides and has running reports ?

ok here are the pics of the valve covers planning on doing fan and other bits soon
I know before people start telling me off !! Why have I powder coated the inside of the covers ? Simple they where flaking off any way on the inside and had no choice. On speaking to powder coater he is opinion original coating was powder or painted on. All I know is that the originals had some sort of coating on the magnesium covers and this had flaked off and mixed with my oil so what the hell a small amount of impurity in 12 litres of oil is not gonna be a issue especially since it is powder and will be crushed by engine.. I will keep an eye on it and will check again in 1000 miles or so but all other renn listers in here have powder coated both sides never had a thread started oops I messed my engine due to powder coat ?

I media blasted mine inside and out and took them to the powder coaters. I only powder coated the outsides. They did not do anything special and they look really good and are working perfectly.
