My 964 Withdrawals ...
Its been a fun and stressful journey so far. Once I started to get deeper and deeper into this project, it was time to really sit down and do some homework. (I'm working with a pretty respectable Porsche mechanic in SF.) This all led me to Rennlist where I sure did pick up a thing or two.
So I thought it would be fun to share with you guys, what I'm up to ...
It all started with a slipping clutch in my 1990 C2. So I figured, while the engine is out, lets do a little something more. CAMS!!!!! While in the process of removing them, we came across the following little issue. Can you spot it?
(sorry about the funky pic. the light was coming in from the window in the back.)
Bam, broken stud!!
But after replacing the studs, piston rings, new cam grind, mass airflow, and of coarse Steve Wong chip in conjunction with my existing primary and secondary bypass' .... I hope to have my baby running like a champ.
I dropped of my car January 1st .... lets see when I get it back
(mechanics been too swamped, BS I know, but now has help in his shop and is back in the full swing of things)

it took a shop 8months to rebuild my old 2.7 a few years ago. They kept giving me excuses when I know they were working on more expensive motors.

after about 7 weeks of hearing "I will get it done as soon as possible" and never seeing any progress, I showed up with my AAA card to tow my car out of there ..
(engine was out)
After that, my mechanic got to work AND gave me a discount ...

Smog issues, too. RS cams in my 3.8 caused all manner of problem for the previous owner to get the yellow car to pass when he sold it to me. Luckily, he was able to re-address the car in Monterey so he ended up not having to dyno test it.
Others can disagree, but my 100% as-factory-delivered-down-to-the-catalytic-converter RSA #1 lost at most 1 car length from T11 to T2 to TWO factory 964 cups when I rolled it out for its first club race at Laguna in '02. Never bothered to worry about more power after that weekend.

Smog is one thing I am definitely thinking about. I didn't go for a crazy regrind, so I hope all will be ok in that department. I was looking into a 3.8 upgrade but unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) my cylinders are not the type you can bore. Based on what your saying, smog might have been an issue with the set up I was dreaming about. Perhaps its a blessing in disguise
The regrind was only $425 plus an extra couple hours of labor. My decision to do it led to the discovery of the broken stud, so all in all, I'm glad I went for the direction I did.
