It's been a long, snowing, salty winter here in KC.
The 964 has sat in the garage for over a month now. I wrote to my mechanic about storing it without starting it for this long. He said drive it as often as possible. If roads do not permit, he said, back it out and start it and run it until it warms up to keep the seals and other parts lubricated.
Anybody else think this a good idea? Bad idea?
This is my first winter with a 911 and have heard points and counterpoints on this and both arguments seem to have merit.
Mine's sitting on jack stands and w/o oil for a month now. Will be there until March is my guess. Adrian's book has a winterizing procedure in it. I'm sure there's one on here somewhere.
Do not start the car and let it idle, only start if if you can drive it enough to get it to operating temperature.
+1, + it needs to be run at power long enough to evaporate the water and acids that condense in the crank case when the cold engine was started. Visualize hot blow-by gases inside a cold engine. There is a lot of condensation formed.
Start, idle, and shut off will result in engine internal corrosion. You risk stuck piston rings or even a locked up engine.
Just leave it- you're not stroing it for 4 years, just a few months. Put the porsche battery maintainer on though (the one that plugs into the cigarette lighter is easiest to use). Next year if you remember, put some Stabil (gas stabilizer) in the gas at the last fill up before the winter. Only other thing I do is pump the tires up to 45-50 PSI for storage w/sticky note on the steering wheel reminding me to lower to spec levels in the spring before driving. A few minutes of driving on the highway takes out any vibrations from slight flat spots after sitting for a few months as the tires warm up to operating temp.
Thanks a ton guys. Great stuff. Except by you, Springer: I visualized blow-by gases and it ruined my breakfast.
Will let 'er sit as is with cteck charger on it, tough they are calling for temps in 50s this weekend so...
I'm stuck in the middle. Last drive on dry, snow, salt free roads was Dec 6th (about 6 weeks). Nothing since then, but I'm waiting for the first opportunity. I decided to start it up and idle/rev until the oil temp rose then dropped (thermostat opening).
So I'm somewhere between stored and on the road. Anyone else in my situation? Anything special you do?
