Default Lowering question

Hey everyone,

I am seeing a lot of really nice 964's that are lowered more than the usual H&R green setup. I come from a VW background and all of my cars have been pretty low. The danger there was mainly cracking oilpans. Not a big deal!

My current 964 has the above mentioned suspension setup however I'd love to be a bit lower. What are the dangers of lowering a 911? What is the lowest point of the underside that could cost a lot to fix should it contact something?

I know these are stupid questions but I'd love to hear some replies from those that or lowered more than usual!

Thanks in advance!

Derek

ive got mine as low as i would like to run it as a daily, although it could go lower

main problem i get is the very front scrappng, nothing else scrapes..

the underside of 964's is very flat so its prime for lowering!

im also from the vw background so just had to lower the 964, my old rallye

Do not forget, if you lower the car too much, you will have the dread bump steer problem.

Can you still drive fast at this height?

My car is way too high... 4x4, stock US high. I can't wait until I get my Bil/HR combo.

That said, at it's current height, it flys around town without much worry about driveways, speed bumps and parking garages. I can dart around town -really enjoying the car- and never bottom out or scrape anything. And when I take it up into the mountains, it just flys around corners.. again never bottoming out or feeling unstable. It's not as sexy as a lowered car, but the travel movement stablizes the car and allows to truely amazing pace.

Are these cars still functional when lowered this far? They DEFINITELY look great!

Mine is the usual Bilstene/H&R. To be honest I would not go lower. I bottom the nose out if I do not go over speed bumps <5 mph. It does not look slammed!, it looks like a sports car suspension.

The geometry of the 964 front end deteriorates rapidly when the car is lowered too much. You can use a 993RS front suspension which allows the car to be lowered further before geometry goes out the window

Did you get H&R reds or greens? I may have missed where you said that elsewhere. Did you use the nominal lowering amount for the spring, or did you adjust to some other level? Can you tell me what the height measurements are? Your car looks right where I'm hoping to end up. I am about to launch into this myself, so any info you can provide is appreciated. Thanks!

my car is running H&R greens and my current ride height is set at
24.75" front and 24.25" rear measured at the fender lip thru the middle of the wheel.

I did this myself a few years ago. It was a fun and educational process. Did a lot of cleaning while I was in there too.

Word of advice, do your research on this site and make sure you order all your parts and have them in hand before you start, or it will take longer than expected. Some parts may need to come from Germany.

I used Bilsteins and H&R Greens. I told the shop that did my alignment and corner balance to set it up to RS specs and I think that is what they did.

The top nuts for the front shocks require a Hazet socket or a home made type.

Here are some posts that I started that may help you with this project. Good luck. Can't wait to see another lowered Targa.

Also check out this site if you have not already. There is another "How To" in the Technical section.

This was my 964 and I had somewhat unlimited potential to set ride height. JIC Competition coil overs. Auto Associates in CT set the car up and they know 964 perhaps better than anyone - they take care of something like 8 US Cups. Here are photos of my ride height, explained to me to be the absolute optimum. Can't recall what it is, but I remember them saying "Euro RS height".
