Yeah, I was just kidding. I'm not going to set it on fire, roll it off a cliff, or exclusively drive 944s (although, I will never part with my 944 turbo). I'm really enjoying the car a lot, all oil fill issues aside. I'll take some pics as soon as I can clean it up a bit. The car was not loved in its previous life so it has required a lot of work to bring it back. It will be a long process. I appreciate all the help. Also, I would love to see a few other 964s. Any others in the DC/NOVA/MD area, we should go for a drive one of these days. Oh, also, my gauge looks exactly like the one in the 5th picture when hot. Awesome use of a dry erase board! Still looks overfilled on the dip though.

If it looks like the 5th picture when hot hot and standing still at idle on flat ground ,
its perfect , imho . If the motor uses a bit of oil and the needle goes down into the red , and a jot of oil . If the needle ever goes way up then the oil level in the tank is getting closer to the vent outlet to the intake system . And we know that we both really don't like it when the oil gets into our intake systems , it blows .

Your local PCA chapter -- Potomac, Founders Region -- meets for breakfast twice a month... 1st Saturday of each month at Chutzpah's Deli in Tysons Corner (9a.m.); 3rd Saturday of each month for brunch at the Irish Inn (11 a.m.) in Glen Echo, Md. I'm usually the only 964, although there ARE a few others. Several drivers usually go for a ride afterwards. See www.pcapotomac.org

Yeah, I've hung out with a few of the Potomac region folks and Dorkis. I haven't had time to get as involved as I would like. I'll definitely try to make one of those soon. This seems like a great area.

This is a great area for pcars. I did a founders track inspection event and everyone was helpful and friendly. There are also a lot of recommended 911 specialists.

OTOH I RARELY see 964s driven on the road. I have seen a total of one (not mine) 964s in the last year. I am not even sure that counts because it was a turbo.

Sterling is probably better as I am in the city.

I'm in the city too (Arlington). A friend of mine in Sterling was just kind enough to let me use his lift for two months! I have seen exactly one 964 here as well. It was a white one on Rockville Pike that I think someone was test driving from Easterns (b/f they went out of business). It was nice. The car I bought will be a daily driver for my dad if I can ever get it sorted completely. Back on the topic of oil, I think these cars are more air cooled than I thought. I drove to work this morning (22 miles) and the the needle never got to the third line. I don't think the thermostat ever opened because the oil level needle never moved from the bottom.

Did the front pass side fender get warm ?
If the thermostat is stuck open then the motor will take longer to heat up .

I think I have the oil situation figured out finally. I went for a drive at lunch and got the engine hot. The theromostat opened and sitting flat and idling, the needle came up just to the top of the red. I added just a tad more oil and the needle is now completely above the red (but just a little). Checked the dipstick and can seemingly make out the difference between sheen and actual oil above the lower mark. I do appreciate the help and advice. I am definitely grateful for the dry erase pictures, as otherwise, the oil delivery system just seemed like a bunch of voodoo.
