Default And we think our cars prices are depressed...

I don't think I've seen 996's in this price range before, have you?

From a listing in a Roadfly ad
Make: Porsche
Model: 996 C2
Year: 2000
Body: coupe
VIN:
Exterior Color: Silver
Interior Color: Black
Transmission: 6sp manual
Mileage: 78,500
Price: $21,500

http://www.roadfly.com/porsche/class...php?view=45024

To be fair, the seller does say "priced to sell". I wonder what a carfax would turn up?

considering the internals of the engine can explode at any given moment, thats a high asking price

I've seen quite a few go from 15k-17k or so. There's a 99 C2 tip coupe with 93k miles with $16,500 'buy it now' price on it.... seems to be pretty standard pricing these days.

There was a big debate I saw on the 996 forum regarding the 996 values.

It seemed that people give their opinions, some folks took it personal, started name calling and feeling were hurt

Its a tuff economy and all luxury items are on the decline.

Another way to look at that is, an informative thread was set up, informed opinions were given, and then wellcraft ruined it with his nonsense.

nonsense? I started by giving my opinion that the cars don't have a high 996 value because of their issues. i really don't want to start this again, but if you can't admit that the 996 is a low point in porsche history then nothing I can do about it. Same with teh 964 no gasket in the head issue. Luckily this issue was fixed by porsche or most owners over the years andyour good to go.
The RMS issue seems to be reoccuring with no really good fix from the posts I have read of doing it three or more times in short miles.

The thing is, whether it's justified or not - the horror stories about 996s do affect people's willingness to buy them. Although I'm glad I bought it, I didn't buy a turbo because I wanted a turbo. I wanted a newer 911 as a daily car, and a 996 would have sufficed - it's what I originally planned to buy and it would have cost me much less (and servicing would have been less too).

But I just couldn't bring myself to trust the reliability. Even if I bought one and had no problems, I couldn't get rid of the feeling that I'd be driving a time bomb. Perhaps it's unjustified, perhaps it's all due to internet forums - but it's honestly the reason I didn't buy one.

Of course, any car can have problems - but the scare stories did affect me, and it's hard to believe they don't have an effect on prices. Although - I suspect the main factor with prices is there are just so many of them.

I read the thread and I think Wellcraft brought valid points and supported them with facts based on conversations he had with mechanics as well as independent sources. Either you agree with them or reject them either way that is fine. In my personal pursuant of Porsche other the years I have heard of some issues with the early 996 motors from very reliable source – respected mechanics – Bill Rudtner, Eddie Bello, the guys at RPM North Racing – so this issues are documented. Either we accept that these issues are part of the cause to the depressed price in the early 996 market or not.

Either way doesn’t really matter to me - I am not try to convince anyone they should or should not buy a 996 of any vintage – it just seems we are quick to name call if we don’t agree on someone else points or opinions and a lot of people pile on…for what point ? I can’t figure that out!

well the 996tt is a different motor so I don't know of the issues involved with the 996tt. I would buy a 996TT in a heartbeat, but not a 996 just because of my silly perception of what I heard and read. It is just my opinion that seems like many others have.

I've seen em for less too.. $16-18K at "retail" prices means they were no doubt bought at wholesale for around $14K.

996 - its the "new" midyear

Yeah, I would call that nonsense. Maybe you have different word for it.

Friends do not let friends buy 996... we point them to the 996TT. Best car for the money, with a real engine, tranny, suspension, brakes...

I tried to steer away a friend from buying a 996... he would not listen... he paid dearly for it... The only good thing is that he ended up trading his 996 for my 996TT...

What does the term trolling mean? I am certain Marc is a nice guy I would have no reason not to believe that! But I always believed respect is a two way street. The fact that Wellcraft hasn't purchase a full rennlist membership doesn't make this points or less valuable. Or because someone has 40000 post they are the most respected - I mean seriously come on - that to me is just silly.

Than people pick on typing or grammar errors - come on this is a Porsche forum not English class - It just makes our Porsche community look egotistical and full of our selves. You wouldn't agree?

Just give it some time all water cooled Porsches bottom out around 5-10 grand the 996 is no exception. Just look at all the 944s 928s and 924s for less than 5 grand now. The 914's are worth more !

Even the Mighty GT2 can be had for about 50 grand, it was over 120 new !

There is a beautiful 01 fully optioned 996 turbo with only 16K miles on it for sale by me and he can't get 49k for it !
