Default New coils = no start?

I can't imagine what caused this.

I did the coil check today: pulled off one of the ignition module plugs, started the car, shut down the car, then repeat with the other plug. It ran about the same on either, but I picked up a pair of new coils recently and decided to replace them anyway.

It's a pretty straight-forward process. The posts use two difference sized terminals, so there is no chance of mixing them up. When I had everything back together, the car just cranks and doesn't fire.

I then reverted back to the original coils, and still no start.

Anyone have an idea of what to check?

I assumed you re-checked all the connections.

Might be the DME relay. Can you hear the fuel pump turn on when you turn the key to "on"?

Thanks for the quick reply,

I've checked all the connections about a hundred times now...

I don't ever really remember hearing the fuel pump prime. I'll let it sit overnight and check in the morning.

You can also jump the DME relay if it's indeed faulty and you don't have a spare. You have to jump from 30 to 87 (power for the DME), and from 30 to 87b (power for the fuel pump).

I made a jumper cable some time ago and keep it in the fuse box just in case of an emergency.

No luck jumping the relay. It's multimeter time now.

There should be 12v at the coils terminals with the key in the 'on' position, right? Because I'm not seeing it...

*Edit, getting +12v on both coil terminals with key on and relay jumpered. And I do hear the fuel pump running.

No spark - I pulled one of the upper plugs to check.

I disconnected the battery after testing the old coils one at a time. Then put in the new ones, reconnected battery, and nada. Then disconnected battery, put old ones back in, reconnected, and that's where I'm at now.

I am getting +12v on both coil terminals with the relay jumpered and ignition on.

Incidentally, the plug that I pulled out was completely dry, as if I'm not getting fuel either?

That does rather sound like a dead DME relay - you won't get fuel and you won't get a spark. It seems a bit coincidental though.

Edit : Stupid comment, since you say you jumpered the relay.

Do you have an immobiliser? Could that be cutting in somehow?

I only have the stock alarm. If it is somehow triggering, then would it cut power to the dme and leave power to the coils?

Solved, missed an engine electrical connection. See here -

New coils are in now too. Not noticing much if any performance difference on my 70k mile car. Now I have extras at least.
