Default fan clanking and groaning

Hi,

I have just replace the fan bearing and put the alternator back on the car and its making some strange noises.
I did have a small problem due to the uk weather when I remove the fan alternator etc and neatly removed everything in sequence I manged to mix the conical washers and shims up due to working outside and a heavy downfall of rain catching me out.
I have the large one against the fan the four shims between the other one they then secure down with the three allen bolts.
Then the small conical one followed by the large outer then two shims then the large out small conical and nut.
Why is it bloody acting up,I tried various levels of tightening the main nut and loosening ,has the nut a special method of tightening ?
The belts are both the same and match the originals, but they seam really tight to me.I put one on at a time a turned the car over then re-tightened.
Please give me your ideas or a sketch of the shim conical washer arrangement as the pet drawing is not good.
Regards Gaz

I think I would take off the belts and then spin the fan and the alternator by hand and feel for any problems . If the fan and alternator feel ok , I would put the belt/s back on .
The shims are what change the tension of the belts . If the shims are outside the V , the V is closer together and there is tighter belt . If the shims are between the V , the V is farther apart and there is less tension on the belt . Please don't run the belts to tight , thats bad for the bearings .

The v-belt can be noisy on the alternator pulley if that one is not perfectly surfaced (it happened to me). The pulley becomes pretty hot quickly, it's a sign to check.

If you dont have the alternator and fan shroud fit into the small key at the bottom of the housing it will be a little crooked making the alignment with the pullys a bit off. I had to remount mine for this reason.

Default relax and start again

Thanks for all the info, yes the belts are getting warm, will loosen the band on the shroud tomorrow and get into the groove(classic madona stylee)I have four shims inner and two outer so I could do with some spares.
But I will tell anyone once the wires are connected to the alternator the shroud is a real pain to move into position.I have finished for today but I will get on it tomorrow.

Many thanks again Gaz.

Default I love fan bearings forever.

ok,got up 6.30am was on the spanners by 6.35am.
Loosened the shroud on the band and released the plug lead strap and plastic pipe going into heater.
Twisted the shroud moving fwd and back and I am in the groove, then tighten everything back up,span the fan by hand no noises.
Then put the fan pulley on four shims inner ran her up,then re tightened the three allen bolts up no noise.
Just put the outer on,put two shims in the centre tightened it up using the proper tool,,,tried to start it,bloody flat battery will post later the result, but my mate owns a porsche specialist garage so he's opening up later and giving me extra shims, should there be three outer.

regards Gaz
p.s its on the charger

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

. . . and are you using the 6 shims total, or did you add some?

It appears you have more shims than necessary. The manual shows 4 in total I believe?
