Acceptable leakdown and compression?

Thats the term used to describe the procedure of placing a small piece of wood on the valve stem and striking it sharply with a hammer. This has the effect of loosening hard carbon that may be trapped between the edge of the valve and its seat.
Sometimes, it works really well, especially for engines that spend a lot of time idling and used for short trips.

how much should a through PPI and compression/leakdown test run me. I spoke with Ron at Hans Foreign Car Service and he told me it would be a minimum of $500 since they need to remove the exhaust and replace the gaskets etc, labour intensive (Zotz was going to charge me $255). He suggested that he does a visual inspection ($120) and if it looks like there are problems, then do a compression and leakdown ($500).
Does that sound right? How can Zotz do something that is labour intensive for half the price?

Mine was $100 for the PPI with another $100 for compression at Auto Europe in MI. I did not have the compression checked (time limiting) but they didn't think I needed one after looking at the car anyway. Been curious about it though so getting another opinion this week while it is in the shop for something else.
Good luck!!

FIrst post here and looking forward to surrounding myself with some smart minds as I'm experiencing some troubles and about to dive in deeper with a mechanic I trust but would like to educate myself more to ensure they are taking the right steps to protect y $$ interests.... LEAK DOWN WAS YET TO BE PERFORMED TO CONCLUSIVELY DETERMINE LEAK. FURTHER TESTS AND WORK ARE REQUIRED. WARNING LEAK WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING IS FELT NEAR EXHAUST SIDE OF CYLINDER HEAD.
