Power Steering Flush DIY

Another follow up. As I've just had my rack rebuilt most of the system is empty, I thought I'd try a dry crank with some fluid in the line as I expected this would draw some fluid in through the pump.
However, nothing.... fluid doesn't budge. Am I missing something? Surely a dry crank should be enough for the pump to draw some fluid? (Yes, it is connected to the pump input!)

If I recall correctly, I had the engine and pump running for brief moments in 'cycling' the new fluid and flushing the old fluid. Helper sat in driver seat turning engine on/off for short period. It does move fast so only a few seconds (<10 secs) worked well for me.

So, with nothing happening on a dry crank I fired up the engine and it pulled the fluid straight through.
Surprised it did nothing on the crank.

Nice. Glad it worked ok. It probably did do something on a dry crank, but with engine fired up the pump is spinning fast. Once I completed the refill I had the car up on the lift, engine running and full steering lock side to side a few times checking the fluid level and topped up as necessary.
