Default Question on 964 transmission

I'm trying to figure out what goes in a hole that is on the driver's side of the transmission on the plate that covers the differential. The parts cd doesn't show the hole at all. I got this transmission used and it is missing the plug that presumably covers the hole (and gets held in place by a clip). ...and no, I'm not referring to the fill plug for the transmission. See picture... If anyone has a part number for this that would be even better. Many thanks.

I thought your '964' had both 993 engine and transmission?

Sorry I can't help on the plug question. Will I see you and Stan at the PCA race at Thunderhill?

Tom:

We won't be making the trek up to Thunderhill. I see from your sig line that the 993 is gone. How is the SL?

This is for the 964 transmission that we have had sitting in our garage since we got the car.

Unfortunately not. There is a plug for the spedometer, but it looks different and is in a different location. Hall sensor is also in a different location up on the flywheel.

I believe it is a speedometer sensor.
Oddly enough, though, only used for the 89 & 90 models.
Part no. 964-606-210-01.
About $100.
I believe the items (in orange), from right to left, are it's retainer clip, insertion hole and connector's perch.

The only thing that keeps me saying "I believe" is the orange area below in the cartoon.
This protrusion doesn't exist in the photo, above.
It may, or may not, be consequential. (But the difference does give me slight pause.)

I guess I was a little too quick to dismiss BlueHeeler's suggestion. Sorry about that. You were clearly right, and I have clearly been working on the later cars that use the ABS sensors for speed a little too much lately and forgotten that the older cars (like my old 944) had the sensors on the transmission.

Thanks very much for the help.

Harry: You'll be missed at the race. The SL63 is a wonderful car. There's a lot to like when you have 520 hp and 465 ft-lbs of torque coupled to a very comfortable, yet capable, ride. All the new technology is very nice in comparison to what was available in the mid-90's. It's hard to get used to the quiet (even with the top down) compared to the 993. The V8 isn't loud but has a very nice 'burble' in the exhaust.

I know this is an old thread but am trying to isolate a non working speedo down to a specific problem. In addition abs light still keeps coming on and I'm wondering wether this is because of a combination of sensors. I've done a resistance check on all the abs sensors on the wheels and they are all in parameters and oscillate when the wheels are turned.

I originally thought the problem was the above mentioned sensor but after unplugging the solenoid( on the opposite side of the box) the speedo started working but abs still did not.

So my question is really what is the sensor for on the opposite side of the transmission( the one with a rubber boot on it) not pictured above?

Cheers
