Question What Year Is This 964?

I'm looking at a 964, and the seller says it's a '91.

But it was built in 9/91 - so isn't that a '92?

Although it has flag mirrors...

Hrm.

Anyone?

Get the Vin #, 10th figure is the year
89 = K
90 = L
91 = M
92 = N

Obviously that VIN digit is where you go. But for another datapoint, that '94 cab with the rod knock I picked up last fall and had for a few weeks (can you believe the guy is going to convert it to electric?!?!?) was built 5/93.

FWIW, that late in the production, it would have the LUK flywheel and head gaskets from the factory.

I like your style. Walk away, it never costs a penny. OTOH a PPI can give a good diagnosis of health without records if the price/color/interior are what you are looking for.

Really? That's good.

It has an "M" in the VIN, even though it was a 9/91 build. Is that correct???

The guy says it definitely leaks oil, but he's not sure where from...

Full re-paint in factory color, at the paint was fading etc. Looks good in photos...

Some sort of issue with the power functions of one of the seats.

Some sort of Bilstein suspension, details unknown...

Absolutely no records, other than recent oil changes and recent tires.

Basically 100% stock. Barely driven in the 3 years of current ownership.

Yeah, I dunno. Don't want to buy a moneypit. But his price is very good, and I do like the uncommon color.

Might try a PPI, not sure yet. I'm teetering between "Interested" and "Not".

Spill all the details... what's the price? Actual color? Location? We won't scoop it from you. This helps us locate cars we've already looked at, or may have an opinion about. There are a lot of 964s out there, but with the interwebs, it becomes a small world...

If the VIN says its an M series car, then it's a '91. What makes you think it was built in September of '91?

I have it in the back of my mind that the model year switches over in May? So anything built after that would be a '92. I could easily be wrong on that, I just seem to remember May as the cut-off date for some reason.

Haha!

Autotrader - Cobalt Blue '91 listed at $13k, in Phoenix, Arizona.

The car looks lovely in the photos, but then, they all do (they're Porsche's). I talked to the owner, and when I asked about condition, I got a lot of "Well, I'm not sure" and "I can't say, I don't really know". It could be a real moneypit, even with the low price. False economy and all that.

What a shame, coz Cobalt Blue is awesome.

I asked the owner for the build date, and he gave me 9/91. I have not seen the car in person.

I really really like the color. But it's easy to fall in love over pretty pictures (Van Gogh effect - good from far, far from good). I would hate to have to dump big money to resolve the apparently substantial oil leak (1/3 of a quart after every drive of no more than 30 mins). It's probably not going to be cheap. The A/C also doesn't work. And one of the power seats has an issue. And the seat centers have been recovered in blue leather (the rest of the interior is grey). And it has NO service records.

Very sad.

Oh, and here's the VIN I was given:

WP0AB2960MS410972

So if it's an M, it can't be a 9/91 build, right?

According to Adrian's book, M series were built until 31 October 1991 for both US and ROW versions.

Good one on Van Gogh effect.
