since my car came with an aftermarket alpine stereo i am uncertain of the stock stereo for a 1990 coupe.

is the cr-220 the stock stereo sold with the 1990 964?

My '90 C2 came with (and still has) a Blaupunkt Reno 2 AM/FM cassette deck.

You're not missing much.

I suspect the CR-220 would have been an upgrade?

Should have been the reno, or the later cars had the cr-1's or cd-1's, iirc.

Car audio has come a LONG was since 1990 - any comtemporary Alpine deck is going to blow those old decks away - especially if installed and wired to best practices. So if you're after anything other than concourse originality - I'd upgrade.

Our '91 came with, and still has, a CD-1. It sucks at best and hasn't been turned on in years. I'm not sure the CD 220 is much of a step up. Current aftermarket units are a huge improvement.

the alpine system in my car is fantastic...PO spent alot of money installing it with nice amp/etc...

i found a cr-220 locally on craigslist for $50 and was going to buy it just to have the original but since found out the cr-220 was the stock unit for the boxster and 996.

I managed to find a CR-1 which looks cool and I bought a shedload of 90's cassettes for peanuts (on fleabay) which are wicked, but I'd love a CD changer for it. I tracked down a CDC-1 changer and bracket, but the CR-1 has a different plug than the CDC-1. Does anyone know which changer it used? Anyone want to do a swapsies with me? Also the CR-1 only seems to tune into odd numbered FM stations... I don't really care cause I don't listen to radio that much anyway but I like the cassette and would like to have a CD changer too... I still prefer the sound of the 3.6F6 tho...

Do you know if the newer blaupunkts have the same connector as the Reno? (I really don't want to cut wires)

Thanks

The CDR-220 is a Becker-manufactured unit that was standard equipment in the 996.
It's a step up from the CD-1 (mine skipped every time I hit a bump) but I'm sure there are better head units on the market.
I bought one mainly because of it's looks (looks stock; even says PORSCHE on it) and the fact that I always wanted a Becker. I don't listen to it much though; the best soundtrack is right behind me
I got mine from Stefan at SW Stereo. He sells everything that you need to hook it up. I didn't have to splice any wires.
