Talking My First Trackday

Now I'm wondering why I have waited so long before doing this. I took part in my first trackday ever last Friday.... what a blast.. it was Bedford autodrome southwest circuit, very safe even considering the torrential rain that nearly stopped play.

I must admit, 130mph down the back straight through some v. deep puddles was scary at first. The old girl showed herself well with many an young upstart held off....

I had mixed feelings (dread and excitement) prior to doing this... really didn't want to damage my baby but whilst many around were spinning and off roading I stayed v. conservative.... I think it's best to improve slowly but surely. Anyway, without realising the time, I stayed out on ciruit a whole 1.5 hours without pitting! (open pit lane)

Now I can't wait to book again but the whole 'slippery slope syndrome' is kicking in hard.... suspension mods? bit more power? track rubber? a. n. other$$$$ ???? (yes I know, I should look to improve the pilot first )

So, this is a MASSIVE thumbs up for the 964, what a fantastic machine.

LOL when I read the title my first thought was, “Slippery Slope”. It is good fun though.

Its a lot of fun, isn't it? Very addictive. I wish I could do more DE events but most of the clubs in my area only drive at tracks during the weekdays and I have a finite amount of vacation time.

Ive still not taken the trackday plunge yet!
Ive been thinking about it for a while, cost and lack of ***** has stoped me so far.
You not scared of sumone giving your white flash a ding?
Ive got the fear due to lack of money, running a porsche on a budget.

But ive taken the first step and iam goin to curbourgh in sept.

The lower cost lower risk version is autocross/autosolo.

I did ~10 autocrosses before I went on the track. The transition was very easy because although the speeds are higher on track everything is happening more slowly if that makes sence.

Welcome to the best way to enjoy your p-car!

Yes, more seat time and driver education is your first, solid investment. Proper brake fluid and pads are next and, as speeds increase, safety equipment. You may want to leave the performance mods off until you're certain you want to continue down this path with your current ride.

Enjoy and be safe!

There's no great embarrassment in following the usual pattern of events followed by many slip-sliders before you. Namely: rubber, + power, + suspension, + interior sporty things (pedals, belts?, etc.)

Then, somewhere along the line, you'll take that first performance driving lesson (hopefully w/ your old girl!)
At that point you'll shake your head in wonder over how much driver incompetence has previously detracted from all that new rubber, + power, + suspension, etc. on your old girl.

So, go get the rubber and brake pads and suspension 'adjustments' as every newly slip-sliding fellow is want to do...
The powerplant and brake hardware are pretty decent, left alone, as-is, for the time being.

But someday... after that first driver's lesson...
...you'll be shaking your head in chagrined amusement at yourself. [It's a right of passage, I guess. ]

And - Welcome to the club!

Indeed...welcome to the club

Myself and a variety of other Pork are booked on Rockingham on August 15th...a step up from Bedford Auto but still very forgiving for the newish trackdriver

p.s. I'd hate to see what state your brakes are in after a solid 1.5 hours on track!

Trackdays make heroin look cheap. Welcome to the club. I agree that order of upgrades should be driver, then pads and fluid, just like joey suggested. Good luck, and enjoy.

+1. I personnaly resisted the modification bug, but still manage to spend significant money on tires/brake pads/brake fluid and gasoline.

It is fun though, isn't it?

You resisted mods by buying a GT-3! I wish I could resist mods that way.

I wish I could resist that too, well, an older RSR is what I want to resist.

Welcome, I have recently slid completely down the slope. I love tracking the old girl. It is fun holding off 993's, 996's and 997's, the 964's are superb P-cars.

+1 on the brake fluid and and a good set of pads. Enjoy and drive carefully.

My third track day is on the horizon. Mid Ohio in October. Can't wait. It's amazing what this car can really do and I probably are not even getting close to its limits.

We've attended 4 so far this year...

Yup heroin would be cheaper!

After decades of racing two wheels on dirt we (my wife races as well) needed something to do which didn't result in so many surgeries. Enter P-car ownership, and track, and solo raceing.

We just started this year, and are having a blast!

Dude, this is what these cars were built for, and as we see some improving results, we just get hooked more!

Life's good when your tracking a P-car!

LOL - good point, and thanks for the compliment. Seriously, the guys I track with have upped the ante on their GT3s with Motons ($7K), LWFW ($1k), Upgraded Exhausts ($5Kish), RS suspension, Cup parts, and the list goes on.... It gets pricey fast! I did choose to rent the garage at the track though - something really cool about being able to work on your car between run groups in your home away from home...

My dream in 1993 was to own an RSA for track purposes. It took me until 2006 to buy the track car, and by then the GT3 was the no-brainer decision...

BTW - guards red 964s look awesome. Nice rides Ian & Davis!
