Remember reading they were not approved...What was that ALL about?
I am looking at a set of 18" Cayman wheels 18x8"front and 18x 9"rear.
Any help or insight would be appreciated!

Will they fit? I recall looking at a set and somebody told me they won't fit onto a NB 964.

 

If you put 18" wheels on a 964 you may want to consider installing the steering brace for the front rack.

Porsche wrote a TSB stating do not use 18" wheels but many still do without issues. I have read that the 18" wheels put much more stress on the suspension and could lead to failure in high stress driving (DE, AutoX). I even read one comment that 964's with 18" wheels may not pass some regions tech/safety inspection due to the wheel size.

 

I have a NB 964 and they fit with 225/40 x 18 front and 265/35 x18 rear. On sharp turns the fronts rub a little, so I use 5mm spacers (and longer lugs) which helps. But that has never been a problem. At about 21 lbs, they are also are pretty light weight. I like them a lot.

 

P.S. I did install the steering brace for the front rack.

pardon the newb question but what is steering brace? is it the same with strut tower brace? if not, what is it look like?

 

Where do we get the steering brace?
Is it an easy install?(I did my dizzy belt)

Attached (I hope) is Technical Bulletin 9604. If not attached, let me know and I will email to you. Although it says it for a 993, I was told by a PCA tech person it would fit my 964. I ordered it through my local Porsche dealer for $75 along with the required longer allen bolts and had them do the install. The part number for the steering brace is 993.347.131.02 and the 80mm allen bolts are 993.218.103.09 (x 4).

I wouldn't go 18s just because I can get a good deal on cayman wheels, they're heavy. Wait till you can get a nice set of BBS RX or CCWs. No point really in spending more on rubber in 18'' for boat anchors. Sorry guys but stock cayman wheels in 18 are really heavy.

 

Here's the TSB saying no way, any way for 18" wheels. I know many of you run 18" wheels, so I don't know if there's information or technology out there that's superceded this TSB, but it looks like it's just not supported.

Regarding the weight of Cayman S wheel, here is an email from Wheel Enhancement comparing it to Fiske, BBS and HRE.

A friend suggested the MY02 996C2 'Lightweights'... anybody knows how they are compare the the above list? The only draw back is you have to run spacers on the rear.

How about 997 Carrera non-s 18" 5-spoke?
