I think that price must have been for 1 new piston/cylinder set.
Mahle piston/cylinder sets usually sell for around $3200 new.
Most places will rebuild with stock piston/cylinders and add new rings. Don't need to replace unless they are bad.

That is why I ask. The rebuild to my car + clutch with original p/c was $10K.

when i approached my shop and asked about top end and it was $6000 ($90hr)plus another $500 for machining the case for a gasket seal...this would include new rings and engine pad.
the clutch would be another $800 for parts plus labor and also extra for the flywheel machining or swap.
so here in seattle, its approx. $6500 for just the top end and add at least $1200 for the clutch.

Just spoke to Mark @ Exotech, NH - he quoted $4500 for top end with new guides & rings, plus around $1000 for the clutch. At present he would need three weeks to complete.
No affiliation - just wanting to assist any board members in the NE who may be considering this work soon.

Call me crazy, but this seems like a ton of dough. [$21k for a rebuilt replacement engine from Germany is nuts - you can get an entire no-stories 964 for that.]
Any reason you are not contemplating doing part or all of the rebuild yourself, or with a Porsche-knowledgeable buddy? Just curious. I have 122k on my 964 and looking at a top-end job also and pretty sure I'll try to tackle it myself in the off-season. Yes, it will eat up a lot of weekends, but I will learn a TON in the process and save a few G's to boot.

Thank you all for information on costs, shops, and what's involved.
Based on a number of the posts it seems the complete list is as below. Anything else that should be considered? Should all parts be OEM or are there 'upgrades' that would increase the track fun-factor?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Main bearings
Rod bearings
New head studs
New Head Gasket
New Rings
Full Valve Job
New Valve guides (OEM or better?)
Magnaflux, polish and resize the rods
New wrist pin bushings
Magnaflux the crank
Replace Clutch – stock or is there better?
Refinish cylinder surfaces
Install new timing chains, rails etc. (what else?)
New main/intermediate bearings
Regrind cams
Machine case for Gasket seal (which seal?)
Re-machine / replace flywheel?
Original Pistons
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter Reinhart
964 - mostly stock, except brakes and wheels/tires
(maybe a little less stock after the rebuild...)

In the past Geoffrey has recommended:
For the steet simply blueprint the engine using stock parts
with the exception of aftermarket:
valves
valve guides
valve springs
valve spring retainers
rod bolts
rod bearings

I've recently spent about £10k / $14/15k USD on top and bottom engine rebuild to include grinding crank and 0.25 oversize bearings by specialist. Note the Glyco 0.25 bearings were hard to source from Glyco so I ended up getting from Porsche at a healthy premium. You may be able to source in the States for less but it wasn't an option once I factored in shipping costs. On top of all those items already listed by others I also fitted new oil pump, clutch, clutch fork update, new plug cables, new tinware, new and re-plated fittings.
Expensive but it does look the business!

Well - it took a while to get information all sorted out with the various shops that were recomended. After extended discussions I went with Mike at Powertech. Dropped the car off this morning - will not see for 5-6 weeks.......
Will send an update on how things went.
Now am thinking about upgrading suspension and getting a set of 'summer' wheels to supplement track and snow rims.....
Thanks again for all the help.
Cheers,
Peter Reinhart
