'964 Top End and Clutch Rebuild

Now have 150k enjoyable miles - including some excellent track time - on my '964 and got to the point where I need a new clutch and top-end rebuild.

Does anyone have recent price information on a top-end rebuild? Recent price information on all-up costs for having a Porsche replacement engine put in? Pros and Cons? Have searched this forum but not found the answers yet.

Am currently near Princeton NJ - are there any shops in the area with a good track record? Have one vote for Holbert Motor Cars in Warrington, PA.

Thank you for any advice on this

Peter, try Bodymotion in Ocean, NJ. They are the engine builder for TRG and Marcus Motorsports. Mike Bavaro is a good guy.

if you want to pay much less than the above quoted figure & can hack a 5 hour trip up to plaistow, new hampshire, many board members have praised exotech for their work

I got qouted in NJ 4-5k for a top end job with new pistons and cylinders.

Just curious, but how do you know it needs a top end?

Well - leaking a lot of oil now, 150k with quite a few track miles on odometer, and certainly needs a new clutch. Want to drive this 964 for another 20 years, so I figured a rebuild is in order.

when i approached my shop and asked about top end and it was $6000 ($90hr)plus another $500 for machining the case for a gasket seal...this would include new rings and engine pad.

the clutch would be another $800 for parts plus labor and also extra for the flywheel machining or swap.

so here in seattle, its approx. $6500 for just the top end and add at least $1200 for the clutch.

Thank you al for comments. Found out a few more things by calling around today.

Porsche rebuilt engine has to be ordered from Germany - quoted cost $21,089

Top end rebuild from Princeton - approx. $10k -12k all in.
Top end rebuild from Holbert Motors - approx. $5k-$6k plus parts. Did not want to hazard a guess on cost of parts.

Seems the options range from approx. $10k to $21k + labor to install...

Peter,

Call Bill Boys at Possum Hollow Motorsports in Phoenixville, PA. He did an excellent job with my 993's top end/RS clutch and lightweight flywheel work.

My engine pulls very strongly and I don't burn through a drop of oil between 5k oil changes. It's an hour from Princeton and well worth the trip.

While you're at it, call Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems to get better-than-oem valve guides and all the other bits and pieces that should be replaced "while you're in there."

10-12k for just a top end? Protosport told me like 4-5k for rebuild for rings, pistons and cylinders and powertech in NJ told me 10-12 k for total rebuild. Seems high for 10k for just top end.

(maybe a little less stock after the rebuild...)

Please post the quote.

$4-5k seems low to me.

well was looking at a porsche that had a 25% leak down and for them for new pistons cylinders and rings was like 5k. I know they do a tiurbo kit and rebuild teh top end and shave down the cylinder for like 10k..
