Thanks for the report. I too would like to add these to the car. Would you mind sharing the material cost please. I assume it's a relatively easy DIY.

Cheers

Jaime... Yup, it's enjoyable working on a clean machine.
But today I was tempted by anything but...
I was contemplating a '67 912 w/ VW motor today... folks kept dropping by to say, "hey, there's a porsh for sale out in the parking lot." ("GM Grabber Orange" $5,500.)
I must have spent a 1/2 hour looking around that puppy. Lil' rust, here 'n there. Choppy paint job. Spoiled chrome. Some pan replacement, I think.

But, living in a high humidity/rain environment, I could see rust becoming my nemisis.

Still... notions of a hot-rod VW motor getting me dirty while I got that little old grandma clean and perking Did have its attractions, I've gotta say...

Kit cost from Sunset (both sides, all the stuff you'll need) came to $366 (to my front door).
They knew what all was needed for the kit. (Though I checked 'em while confirming the order against a PET listing I had in front of me courtesy of Pelican's web site. )

A one evening-easy DIY.
(And you'll need a torque wrench. Though I suppose, in hindsight, you could get away with just Ummph-tighting all the bolts and be done with it. But I did go the torque wrench route, myself... )

I've seen various warnings around here. Mostly they all come down to this: If you're hardballing your car about tracks a lot, you'd either best weld on a strengthening doubler, or do periodic inspections for cracks around the ends of the count arms.
I'm going to do the latter because my yearly track time is low, low, low single digits.
If it's spirited street driving, don't sweat it.

Of course, now someone's going to relay how 94.3% of all RS mounts ever installed to stock engine support arms have resulted in Hindenberg-like disasters. ("Oh -- the humanity!")

Write me in 5 years and I'll give you the appraisal of my success in this matter.
As I see it right now? So far, [knock, knocking wood], so good!

As always, Thanks elbee!!! This appears to be a reasonable upgrade, and wow do they look great in there too.

How do these RS mounts compare to the Wevo Mounts that are a bit cheaper and come in two stiffnesses.

Ummm... inferior, from the sounds of it. (ie, only one design, non specialist-made, more $...)

The only visible thing it has going for is a factory 11-digit p/n in the cast alum. seat. Haven't the foggiest re ride comparables.

With regard to the failing engine carriers ( I have fitted RS mounts to my C4 ), why aren't RS cars reporting failed carriers? Or are they? The carriers are exactly the same part for the RS cars as for the C2 and C4.

You're right there are few reports of 964RSs suffering a failure and there are a fair few in the UK still being driven hard around tracks. Personally I think it is more likely that a carrier will crack on a normal 964 that is driven hard on worn out normal mounts that have lost their 'shock absorbing' capability.

I've put a carrier strengthener on mine to be doubly sure that it won't crack under pressure. At $75 plus welding costs I thought it was good insurance:

Lonnie, Steve et al,

I wondered if you might share your views, one year on.

-Solid mounts still bearable on the street ? pro's ... con's ...

-Engine carrier fitment issues (Steve) ? (and how much does it weigh?)

-Has anyone fitted a sport transmission mount ? pro's ... con's ...

I'm very interested in hearing your opinions -

I have been using the Porsche OEM RS mounts for a while now with no issues, I do not notice any extra vibration. Very happy customer ! My carrier is reinforced Rennline.

Hi Geordie, no fitment issues with the re-inforcement gusset and I'm sure Pete will agree Rennline have produced a well thought out product for us. Extra weight wise I would guess it adds no more than 1lb. Well worth its weight in alleviating fears of a fractured carrier. Below is the best pic I've got of it fitted....note that although my air con bracket has cut down recently, that the Rennline gusset doesn't interfere with that bracket or compressor.

Pete & Steve,

I really appreciate your prompt responses/findings.

I'm planning my winter projects & deliberating between OEM RS (solid) mounts & the WEVO S/S ones. Regardless, I'll be taking your advice & using the Rennline carrier; it would appear to be relatively cheap insurance.

Steve - thanks for the photograph too .... memo to self ... once a/c compressor is off, must take power tool to hideous bracket

Cheers ~
