Default Favorite valve cover gasket dressing?

I'm coming up on valve adjusting time. Already bought the gasket kit. I've recently discovered that my favorite gasket dressing - permatex hylomar - is now more expensive than gold and tough to obtain. So what is everyone using?

no gasket dressing should be required. The o-ring gaskets fit semi snugly in the covers. I just use a little grease to hold them in place til I can get the covers on.

+1, or use O-ring grease to hold them in place and protect the O-ring grove from corrosion. Gasket sealer leaves a residue that needs to be cleaned off next time.

To go further, I install all paper based gaskets dry and use silicone paste on any rubber o-ring part. Paper gaskets with rubber sealer are installed dry.

Thanks for the responses - though surprising. I'm used to using hylomar to coat paper gaskets with as it stays moist and keeps the paper from drying out over time (and leaking).

Looks like I'll just coat the rubber valve cover gaskets with some oil.

Yup -- cuz they'll get that way eventually on their own...

...and you don't need much pressure at all. I have heard 7 ft lbs...but I just tightened them to "wrist" tight using a 1/4 inch drive, with a short handle. No drips after 1K miles.
