So I posted this in the 993 section as well. What are the differences? any real world opinions. Spoke to a few owners that went from 1 model to the other and a few felt the 964 was faster even though the numbers are about the same. Any opinions and things to look out for on each model. I know the 993 is more money now but i feel once they get a few years older will drop to the 964 value levels.
So please let me know what you think.

Cosmetics and aesthetics IMO. I like the looks of a 993 better and like the 6-speed better than the 5-speed. Performance on the street is nearly equivalent. For a novice to intermediate track driver, the track performance is about the same. On the street, the differences in performance hardly matter and are difficult to demonstrate - one is not going to take some arbitrary corner that much faster than the other (and the limit of either is much greater than the posted speed limit). When was the last time a 0.1 second difference in 0-60 time made a difference in your morning commute?

research the dreaded "CEL" (check engine light) issue with 1996 and newer 993's...you can search the 993 forum for CEL or SAI passages and get info on this.
the cel light prevents the car from passing emissions
if you go 993, make sure the car you choose a 1995 or one that has had the cel issue resolved.
i really like my 1990 964...early 911 feel with the more modern features of the 993...my 964 leaks a drop of oil every so often but its a fun car and i am really enjoying it.
BTW< i sent you a PM with a link to a nice 964 on the pelican parts cars for sale website...just saw it today...charcoal grey w/grey interior...looks like a nice clean car for $15K...its in maine.

The 993 values probably will not drop to the 964's level. There will always be that "last of the aircooled" stigma. A '95 would be optimal for the cel issues mentioned above.

Maintenance wise the 964 is probably pretty close to the 993. The suspension on the 993 is more involved in the rear than the 964. The 993 was also made by hand. I believe the AC on both is use a lot of the same parts? Chime in if I am wrong.

This is a great thread and thanks wellcraft for starting both threads 993 vs 964. I am really in a struggle myself since I do love the look of both cars. The 964 I think I would take the targa since it has great function without being a cab and also a little more headroom in the back for the kids.
Since I know some member here either own both which is nice or have owned both at one time, are the maintence costs roughly the same? I've been told that even with the 993 self adjusting valve the normal service cost is basically the same?
Since the suspension is steel and somewhat simpler in the 964 is it less expensive to replace those parts or upgrade to a nicer street setup? Thanks for all the advice everyone and I can't wait to own a Porsche again, my last was a 87 Carrera coupe.

The dealership will charge an arm a leg for an alignment thanks to the Kinematic arms in the 993. For the 964 is the regular job.
The 964 doesn't have that pesky ports that can clog and give you a fault that will prevent your car from getting the emissions test pass..
I know that 993 thing generally speaking are more expensive.
So 964 rules!

I think maintenance cost are about the same. Just remember the cars are getting old and need rubber parts replaced simple due to age because rubber does not last forever. And gaskets eventually die of old age, and you get the picture. It's not a VW or a Ford and it will cost more to fix than the VW or Ford.
