Help with VIN information
Hello all, I am new to the site and this is my first posting. I am also new to Porsche as I am about to acquire my very first form my sister in-law. I am excited to get going, I have always wanted a Porsche 911. The car I am inquiring about has been sitting in my in-law’s yard for about 6 years and they know very little about it. Most of what I know it is as follows: 1992, 911 Coupe it is black in color and it is currently in a mechanics shop in Alaska (where my in-laws live) being inspected and have a few things fixed. I have contacted a Porsche dealer who was very little help in decoding the VIN or being able to tell me much about the car due to Porsche's data base and how long they maintain data. I have also spent a lot of time on the internet trying to decode the VIN with little success. Please help me with any information that you can about VIN #: WP0AB296XNS420202. Thanks from a new guy who is very excited to get going.

Welcome and congratulations on your new car. I recommend that you get a copy of Adrian's 964 book. Its available from multiple sources. This book will give you a good understanding about the car, its features and capabilities.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your primary question. The VIN has a specific pattern. See this thread.

Welcome to Rennlist -- we're owners for just over a year and can attest to the fact that you'll find everyone on the site to be extremely helpful!
I'm pasting a link to a great website that helps to decode Porsche ViN's -- hopefully this is helpful.

copied over from 911 forum for reference.
wpo is germany produced
ab2 is coupe,usa,with airbags
96 means it is a 964 body style vs 930
x means didley
n means model year 92
s is manufacture location ( stutgart)
4 means 964 ( type 4 body style is 964 )

This info was taken from Petes book the used 911 story which we all highly recomend you purchase before going any further. it is a wealth of information.

Forget the VIN - get the option codes (label glued to front trunk lid) They will tell more of whats installed and a CarFax report may detail any missing recall campains.
