Looks like a decent car with low mileage. Tach and speedo issues? Ummm...The tach maybe an electrical short, but painting the speedometer with these kinds of miles seems kind of odd to me. I would make sure service records correspond with the mileage. I would say it is worth a look. No deal with D&M on that slate grey C2?

I think you might have missed the point about painting the speedo, Seller says its a bad paint job, I think he means that its flaking and you can see through it. Common problem If I'm correct, especially out in the U.S. see lots of pics of flaking gauges.

My car just 100k this week and maybe I am lucky, but I don't have that issue. I do recall seeing pictures of the early '89 964's that had flaking, which almost looked like stickers peeling off. I assume with it being painted that it wouldn't flake so soon. I figure with it being a '91 the factory had updated the gauges and warning so they no longer flaked. I was thinking more along line of odometer tampering than anything, but I am willing to stand corrected.

hhmmm? those badly misaligned odometer digits (048393) are a little suspicious.... the end 3 you might expect but the middle 483? all over the shop!

My odometer does the same thing when getting close to turning the next 100 miles. I have noticed it before.

funny...i saw this car a few days ago and sent him a question regarding any oil leaks....he posted my question at the bottom of the description and his answer makes no sense...

you really have to worry about sellers who know nothing about these cars...

at $28,500 buy it now i think the seller is a dreamer...this car can't be worth more than $21-$22K in this market

I thought his buy it now was a bit steep and sent him an e-mail telling him that & asking what the reserve was set at so i could decide to drive to indy to take a look at it or stop wasting my time. He says his reserve is at 26K. I read that Q/A at the bottom of the listing and thought to myself the same thing. for 26K I'll pass... Waste of gas to go look at it. The top of my budget is at ~23K

get his phone number and call him after the auction...he'll get a good taste of what the actual market value is when his car doesn't sell...

we should take bets on what the bidding will reach...

i say $19,250

My '91 has this, but it doesn't bother me - I call it the "planetarium effect".

There was an almost identical '90 (color, miles, D90's) out here in Portland a couple years ago, and I think it went for around $25-26K. I remember thing, "Wow, that was a good deal!". Things have changed mightily. I wouldn't say the seller is uninformed; he seems to have taken care of the typical things that can happen to these cars, whether he did it or had a shop do it. But he certainly could help himself with better answers. I guess he's trying to say he doesn't have to add a lot of oil between changes.

I agree that the market will give him a reality check on a car that's nice, but not perfect (how about a pic of the fender 'ding'?). Selling just to buy a red car? Maybe he just doesn't want to sell that badly.

I bought an "89 C4 with a bad odometer. I knew the seller. Car had ALL records as well as Dealer sticker certifying guage was replaced around 9,000 miles. Though I have all records one could ask for, it's still a pebble in my shoe.

Nick, for what it's worth I knew of an '86 911S, Peru Red, 36,000 miles, one owner, that was sleeping in a machine shop under a cover about a mile from my office (near Cleveland, OH). My buddy was considering it, but he wanted to spend high teens. Owner was asking I think $23,000. Car was IMMACULATE in appearance.

Not sure if it is still around, but happy to inquire for you.

I appreciate the offer, but I am looking specifically for a 964 Targa or Coupe 5-Speed. I prefer 91 or greater but will take what I can get. It doesn't have to be perfect but I'd like to pick one up (if possible to find) with all original paint with an 8/10 or better exterior and an 8/10 or better interior. Mileage I'm not so concerned with as long as the PPI for the mechanical aspect is good. As for color I'm open for the most part and would probably settle with any exterior color that was in the right condition including the following, but my two least favorite colors are Guards Red (least favorite) any other red shade would be OK, and any shades of green (never liked green cars). My favorite colors are Yellow, Cobalt Blue (sharp) or White. As for interior colors my favorite would be light gray then Linen then tan then black then any others. Not a fan of any of those other Pcar interior colors like Maroon, Blue or any other loud interior colors... yuck! I'm not sure I'd go for a car with a spotless 9+ exterior if the interior was one of those loud yucky colors.

Been searching high and low for a good one but I also want to buy from someone within reasonable driving distance of Chicago so I can look at the car myself before PPI. I am very uncomfortable spending ~20K on a car I have never looked at with my own two eyes.

I'll check with my local shop, they seem to know of cars that are not advertised. They have always treated me fairly. Their PPI on my car was right on. Good luck!

I've seen that car at our de's for the last couple of years. It is a pretty nice car, iirc. Granted, I haven't been under it looking for oil leaks, etc. But first pass, if you are looking for a silver 964 c4, it would be worth a second look.
