Starting quest for a 964....couple questions (flash, OBD, etc)
I am in the beginning stages of searching for a 964 and want to make sure I am totally armed with info before I start getting too serious. I've spent a good bit of time reading this forum and still have a few questions.
Dumb question #1.....Is a 964 equipped with a OBD port like the new cars?
How can I tell if a car has been flashed? (sure don't want to run into a possible car I like to have the owner tell me it's "flashed" for more power or some custom mapping, etc, with no way to tell.
What tests would you do on the motor to determine life left? (leak down? compression? etc?)
Thanks so much!

Is the 964 equipped with OBD? Yes but its a proprietary OBD-1 system. You should read up on the "ScanTool". https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...assembled.html
Is the DME stock or not? I'm not qualified to answer that question.
Strongly recommend getting a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic who knows 964's. There is a good checklist here. https://rennlist.com/forums/964-1989...checklist.html
I hope this helps and good luck on your search.

One additional thought. I recommend you pick up Adrian Streather's 964 book too. Its available from many book vendors. It does a good job of explaining the 964 in detail. (no affiliations).

The easiest way to tell if the DME (chip) is stock or not is to peek at the DME box under the driver's seat. It has metal tabs that have to pried open to access the inside of the box and get at the chip. If the tabs are unbent, then the chip is likely stock.
The chip cannot be flashed via the OBD port so the only way to change the chip or its programming is to physically change the chip.
