More problematic and more common seem the cam housings, which in my case have been cured when doing the valve job work.

I agree that most important thing is finding a well kept car, mine´s a 1993 (manufactured 2/93 according to door sticker) and when I bought it had some leak issues and other issues from what I call "delayed maintenance"
I bought it knowing this issues and don´t regretted at all
Buy the best cost/benefit car you can find
Please be aware of the fact that 964/993 are very uncommon in my country, right now there are 2 993 for sale and not one 964 for sale and the market has been this way for the past year and a half

I had a 1991 (Sept. 1990 Build date) with no issues. The "bigger" problem IMHO is rear shock fitment as you near the transition time and figuring out which shock model needed.

my Sept 90 build has the newer shock type. Mine is a TIP so the engine numbers are different then on a manual and maybe the shock changeover also.

I also have a 91' that has the updated seal design.
"Head gaskets were installed after engine serial number 62M06836 (M64/01) or 62M52757 (M64/02 with Tiptronic transmission)"
