Needed to run the engine without all the extra
hardware then the source of the leak was easy to see.
replace o-rings and washer's. so far its got a dry bottom

my hearing should come back in a week or two

Question

Thanks, so much, Jim, for posting this.

(I'd always wondered what lay underneath that black bridge doo-hickey.)

Was it the orange gasket that was leaking?
(maybe took a permanently squished 'set' with time + temperature)
Or, the black ones?

Approx. price for the black o-rings is $1, each. [4, reqd] p/n 999.701.909.40
The orange gaskets are $0.50, each. [2 reqd] p/n 999.707.288.40

The weird thing is that the PET seemingly has a mistake in describing the black o-rings.
It shows them in two drawings (for that same bridge?)
In one drawing it shows 2 reqd '999.701.909.40'. Then a few drawings later, it shows the same o-ring used on the pressure pipe, w/ 4 reqd.

Your thoughts, Jim?

Hmmm...that could maybe be the same leak I have. What parts did you change, just the red washer or the two O-rings? Can you change these with oil in the engine?

I think it was the orange flat ones that were leaking, but i did replace everything. As for the quality there's two bridge assemblies, each assemble get two o-rings and one flat washer. i didnt look at the PET drawing but iam going to check it out

Right its a cheap fix i already had the parts from some other gasket kit so i replaced everything. do the work while the engine is cold no reason to drain any oil. just a few drops when i popped mine out. you should make sure the area is clean, dont want any crud in the oil line..

Default hope you get lucky

Very often those little black o-rings hold up better than the big green ones that seal the rear of the chain housing where the camshafts come through. I am just about finished with that job. Those oil pressure feed line o-rings come in the kit with the front chain housing seals. The rear paper and viton seals are ordered seperately. Don't ask how I know.

When I look in PET it looks like the p/n for the orange seal is 999.701.889.40 and not 999.707.288.40 as stated above. Can anyone please confirm the correct p/n?

looking at the PET i have bookmarked shows
22 999 701 909 40 o-ring 7.7x3.53 qty 2
23 999 707 288 40 o-ring 6x2.5 qty 2
22 for the pipe qty of two makes sense, 23 for the bridge qty of two makes me wonder as there was only one per side. might be worth a call to you local porsche dealer. btw http://pcbunn.cithep.caltech.edu/jjb...SA_KATALOG.pdf
is the one i was looking at maybe you have a different document.

I think I may have this same leak, so I figured I'd order the parts.

Just a little follow up on this for anybody who's interested:
999 701 889 40 looks like the old part number for 999 707 288 40 (pelican says "Part Superseded to 99970728840").

Their more info tab also states that you need 2 × 999 707 288 40 and 4 × 999 701 909 40. That plus the photographic evidence posted above makes me think the so the quantity for the flat rings is a mistake in the PET.

Anybody tried to change these with the engine in the car yet?

Thanks,
James

its all pretty accessible with the engine in. right side you can do from the top side, i had engine tin and heat shield off. left side is kinda under the distributor so i dropped the cat and removed the engine heat shield and tin. If you have not had the cat off in a while might want to get the gasket and nuts and bolts for that as well. good luck..

I'll get my parts on Monday and it will be the right ones because I talked to a good 964 mechanic at a garage I know so he knew what I meant. I post the numbers when I get the parts.

I've just picked up the parts to do this oil leak fix myself and am now totally confused. I ordered both of the part numbers mentioned in this thread and got from my local Porsche dealer:

These for part# 999 701 909 40

and these for part# 999 707 288 40

I was expecting orange gaskets for the latter. Although I guess there is a small chance that the wrong seals were put in the bag, the description of this part on PET of "O ring 6 x 2,5" appears to match what I've received.
