Unhappy CV Joint question!

Knock....., knock......, knock.......... I dove my car about 300 miles on Monday. As I rolled into my neighborhood, I noticed I faint knock. It looks like the inner CV joint on the drivers side is dry. Could it be repacked or is the knocking a sign of damage?

You can buy a replacement inner joint, no issues.

I was told the reasearch on this is that 1500 miles on a leaking cv joint will toast it. Anyone else hear that?

They do not leak, the grease whips off at high speed when boot is compromised. Typically the rubber boot breaks and then debrit from the road gets nicely mixed in with grease and you prematurely wear out the bearings. As the whole abrasive mess goes around and around the tolerances will get sloppy and knock on your wallet. I rebuilt an axle and kept a worn CV joint as I was impressed by their design and what they accomplish. Here is a picture so you can see what is behind the boot burried in grease. When I get it very clean it will be a puzzle/paperweight? I do not see any harm in shooting some grease in there and see if it quiets down?

The grease will liquify when it gets old or is overheated. It will then leak out the axle vent hole onto the wheel, or through any break in the boot. Once the grease has been compromized, the joint will not last long.

Take them apart and have a look see .
If they look ok , repack them with good grease .

Sorry, I'm already apart and no pics! I lost sleep last night because I didn't finish the job. I had a heck of a time getting the c clips off. The left CV joint grease was like water. I'm replacing both. I had a panic attack!!!!!!! I was removing the supports that hold the engine pan and removed a cover that caused a flow of oil. I was not happy. It was on the right side, 2 bolts and about 2.5" x 3.5". Do I need to be concerned? I never got to remove it, I quickly tightened the bolts. I hope I didn't cause a future oil leak. I need to hear about the proper jack point under the engine, I keep thinking I'm hurting something when I jack my car.

I just came back from a nice long road test. Super quiet axles.......... swooohh! I'll some pics of the piece I removed accidentally. The jack point under the engine is in the DIY section of p-car.com. There's a picture showing the point.

Did the p-car.com section mention the harm that can be done to the motor mounts ?

I know others lift the car via the motor ,
I will not .
