Oil level Sender
My oil level sender appears not to be functioning. I called my Porsche mechanic and asked about replacement. My mech told me he rarely sees a unit that needs replacing but that the contacts can be loose or dirty.
I know where to access the sender unit under the rear wheel arch but where does the other end go? Are there contacts or a connector at the other end that should be checked?

You can test the resistance to see if it is good or not. check with the engine not running and with it running hot. The connector is in the back of the engine compartment on the side across from the air filter.

Kahdmus, You will need to get engine to operating temperature for this test
Clean the area first, then gently pull the connector out from its plastic holder, then disconnect.
Attach ohmmeter to the leads, read resistance while engine is not running, then while running.
But maybe first, what are the symptoms that make you believe it is not working?

If you have a ten turn pot , put it in place of the sender .
If you can run the oil level needle up and down with the ten turn pot ,
the sender is not doing its job , imho .

Steve, do have ohmmeter. I just cleaned put back together and replaced the air filter housing. I'll give it a try when I go back out. thanks, --H
Indy, I have no idea what a ten turn pot is. Sounds like something for the kitchen?!

a ten turn potentiometer (pot) is a variable resistance device that uses ten turns of the **** to go from low to high. they come in various limits.
see the ebay link indy provided. but I think their lowest is too high for this, if I have isolated the correct connector.

Before you go through the trouble of replacing the sensor, I would suggest that you verify that your gauge is working. Its pretty easy. Disconnect the connector, turn on the ignition and have someone watch the gauge. Then temporarily short the two pins and the needle should move to the other end of the scale.
By the way, the replacement of the sensor, is relatively easy. Just be sure to clean the area around the tank thoroughly. You don't want dirt to enter the oil tank.

My gauge is acting a little weird since I put her back on the road. When the car is idle, the oil level gauge sits up high. When moving, it's right down on the red area. Stop at a light, pressure goes back up to the top. When I'm cruising, the needle is somewhere in the middle, accelerate and it dips down a bit. As I drive a bit longer, the thing seems to start working again, as I am cruising and accelerating, the needle sits up on the top. At idle, it's just a bit below the top....no warning lights, everything runs fine.

Nine11,
Sounds normal. Level guage is only accurate when car is level, up to temp. and idling. While driving, level typically goes low, needle pegged down. Confirm your guage with the dip stick while the car is level, up to temp. and idling - you don't want to much oil in the system. You mentioned pressure, but you meant level correct?
