Consider the evolution of the 911. How much change was there from 1978 to 1988? Yea there was a newer model and some improvements but not earth shattering. Look at 1988 to 1998, yea it’s even more noticeable, creature comforts got better and the shape changed or evolved more but I would hardly call it a massive change in the overall car. Then look at the 1998 to 2008 changes and you can see how far automobiles came in that 10 year span. Electronics have taken over, materials have advanced, and there was a massive evolution in the car unlike the 10 year periods before.
You have to appreciate the era of your particular car for what it is IMO. Hank Aaron was probably the greatest homerun hitter of all time. He does not hold the single season record or the overall record, but you can appreciate how great he was in his day and then have some fun speculating what he or any other old timer would be like in the modern era.

Just Spent $20K for a 89 C4 for a my daily winter driver... I could not bring myself to drive anything else... I drove a Gayman, Cayenne, 3 series BMW etc... None of them do it for me like the old C4. Sure it is a little slow, but it feels so good. My wife says I have a problem, she is probably right...

There aren't too many new cars that have the pedigree, the history, the build quality, and the feel of a good old hand built 911. I like to work for my speed....new cars give it up too easily. I like the challenge that the 964 gives to the driver. I may not be the fastest, but whatever I do, I know I did it myself. I don't need no stinking electronics to tell me how fast to go, when to turn, when to apply the brakes etc. Sure they make me look better..and probably would give me more speed too....but I don't want charity. I want out of my car what I put into it. If I wanted easy, I'd drive the appliances I have...it's got all the electronic doodads...traction control, stability control, navi, auto lights, auto dimmers, one touch windows (because I'm too lazy to hold a switch for 4 seconds???), info centre, DVD and surround sound....these sound perfect for my commuter/family cars.

I may be slow by today's supercar standards....but I'm enjoying every longing second of it.

I had a BMW e30 M3 which I bought brand new and wish I still had, and my first real car was a 1976 280z which for its time was a great fun car too.

Not sure I agree at all.

I haven't driven a lot of newer cars, but can compare my 964 to a few 21st century models. I've recently "owned" these various newer cars for periods of time; 2003 MINI Cooper S (my wife's current car - owned since new), 2001 Mazda Miata (had for a couple of years), and a 2001 Saab 9-3 (also had for couple of years). In addition to the 964 I currently have 1988 E30 M3.

I think the 964 integrates a lot of newer technology with the older 911 package, making it more like a "modern" car than the previous 911s. Stuff like power steering, ABS, air bags, working A/C, etc. Funny, I was recently comparing my 1988 M3 to my wife's 2003 MINI. Curb weight about the same (within 1 lb), both have the same onboard computer features, and ABS. The MINI has airbags and Dynamic Stability Control, and an electronic throttle (is that really a good idea?) but the M3 has an LSD and 192 HP vs the MINI's 163 HP.

The electronic doohickeys don't appeal much to me; fundamentally cars seem very much the same from the 90's to now. Maybe I haven't driven enough newer vehicles; especially the higher-end ones, but this comparison seemed to be of a common hatchback with a 964. My experience with the MINI has me finding it hard to believe that a Golf would outclass a 964 as an overall car. BTW - I've driven both the MINI and 964 on the track, no comparison at all. I also find my 964 to be pretty darn quick , but may be that is just me again.

I look at some cars as art. Rolling, living, breathing art. Living history. A monument to a time in history. The 911 is one of those cars. It needs no introduction, everyone knows what it is and admires one when they see it. No matter what year it is. They reek character. Anyone can go buy a Golf. I'd rather have something interesting and beautiful, like my wife.

Over the last couple of months, I have had a constant battle with my wife regards buying a newer "more up to date" car. I have driven every car that you can think during that time. Each test drive results in wishing I never sold my 993. Each seem to leave this huge void that can only be filled by the 911 experience. Everyone on this forum understands what I am talking about.......

I happen to love the smell of gas fumes passing into the cabin due to an old gas cap that needs to be replaced, an a/c system that either blows very cold or not at all (anticipation keeps it fun), the sound of an air cooled engine in the power band, each time you look at the gauges it reminds you of a well crafted watch your father use to wear (the one you always wanted...IWC), a door that shuts with confidence, a body that feels as solid as oak, curves that never get old, that old patina that actually looks better and better the more your polish, endless modifications, history in motorsports, etc. My $.02

You can't get the above in any of the newer cars...you either get it or your don't.

I am in the hunt for a well kept 964 that can double as a street legal track rat. If you are looking to sell, please let me know. I cant stand being Porsche-less....Dream car is GP White with Navy interior

My friends owns an 08 BMW M5. I asked him if he'd like to drive my 964. He figured he'd humour me and agreed. He sat in the car and fired it up. He remarked on the pedal placement, the heavy (by modern standards) steering, the clutch actuation.

He pulled out on to the road and went quiet. He didn't say anything for a mile or so. I said "what do you think?" He turned to me and said "I couldn't understand why you were buying a nearly 20 yo car. I've always figured new cars were "better"". He said "I remember you said that it was an involving drive, an occasion every time you got in. The hissing, fizzying, popping and induction whoosh of the flat six, all part of the drama - I didn't get". But now, he said "I totally get it now and its way better than my M5, I'm so jealous".

Its one of those things, even for petrolheads - you just don't get it till you've had one. I'm glad I get it and really wouldn't want to be without a 911.

Happy motoring.

What is more important the drive or the destination?
