Question 3rd brake light wiring

Hi guys, am trying to wire up a 3rd brake light using the existing Porsche wiring but am getting no volts to the red/black wire on the 6 pin plug thats located on the parcel shelf.

Any thoughts on a fix or do you know where this wire routes so I can see if it is broken? I would like to keep things as simple as poss as not too good with wires!!

Thanks.

I wasn't aware of any brake light wiring going to the parcel shelf. AFAIK the 993 had the wiring up to the top of the rear screen, but not on the 964. Others that I know have fitted the 3rd brake light have run a wire up the C pillar from the rear light cluster. Have a look at Warmfuzzies How-to at http://www.964uk.com/html/How-tos%20-%20Lighting.htm

Edited to add: As far as I can tell, the Red/Black wire at the parcel shelf is the feed for the heated rear window via the relay in the engine compartment.

Regards

Dave

Dave, the red black wire is not used on ROW cars, but is used on US cars for there high level brake light.
Mine just has no power!

Can you take some pics of this while you're at it? As you can see I have an ugly sat nav arial that has to be replaced with something inside the cabin and I want to fit a third brake light since already have a hole through the seal.

The harness on the parcel shelf goes to pax side B pillar area on a LHD car, There is 20 ? pin connector in there, labelled T-10. I'll look tonight on my wiring diagrams.

When I did mine, I used someone to push the pedal and found the wiring that way with a DVM, took about 20 mins, but it made sense to use connectors at the lamp itself as they are easier to gain access to in the even you need to do any work.

Pics of the install etc are on my website, I don't think I have any more than those already there.

Regards

here is a pic of the harness from the pax B pillar to the top shelf. If you have rear wiper there will be three end connectors.

The T36 connector is a 6 pin with a red/black wire in position 6 for the stop light. It goes to the brake switch, so push on the pedal and check the voltage.

Pins 1-4 of T36 go to the rear defogger.

Steve, I checked the red/black at the parcel shelf but got no volts, where abouts in the B pillar is the other end of that loom? Is it a seat out job to get to?

It is behind the side panel covering, right side for all cars about halfway down. It will be pin 9 of the T10 connector. That wire then is spliced with rear brake wires in that loom upstream.

You should be able to get to it without removing the seat. Remove the 4 screws at the top of the panel. You might need to remove the two screws where the seat belt enters, but I forget. Then just workr the panel so you can get to the connector. The loom you are following is only 1 meter long end to end.

I'll go out and try it now.

Remove the parcel shelf first.

Remove the 4 screws holding the top sidewall trim piece. Remove trim piece.

reach down to the back and bottom of the humped panel and lift up. There is a slotted clamp for holding the panel in place.

Pull panel away from wall to see connector.

There are two red/black at T36, but it is pin 6 for brake light. I am puzzled that you don't have voltage on it. What ground were you using? Maybe run a wire to a known ground point.

Hi Steve, Surrey is sunny this morning but the heavens opened lastnight!!
The previous owner had the basket handle brake light removed and I guess they must of messed with the wiring when they disconnected it, I wonder if they cut in and spliced there own.
Thanks for showing the route, it looks straight forward enough now.
