Default Oil Consumption...How much is normal?

Still pretty new to my 964 but I find that I'm going through maybe 1/2 quart every 250 miles or so. I don't have any smoke or anything, even at WOT. Is this unusual?

It's a little higher than normal. Porsche says the standard consumption is 1 quart for every 1,000 miles. Do you do a lot of city driving? This seems to increase consumption.

I have not been doing that much highway driving...mostly country roads with stops every so often. I have been driving it pretty hard and that is probably resulting in some leaking as I left some small puddles at the dyno the other day.

Porsche states 1 qt per 1,000 miles is normal, which IMO is too much. My engine for instance uses 1 qt every 2,800 miles.

Your oil consumption is way above that. Do you have any oil leaks?

It is leaking in a couple of spots, repairing these is on my winter list of things to do. I'll try and post some pics as I get into the job. Right now, I'm enjoying driving too much to take things apart. I'll wait for the snow!

As long as you know it isn't burning oil!
Fix the oil leaks and then check and see.
Are you checking the oil level on the gauge in the car or from the engine?

I check using both methods. Once I have it dialed in with the dipstick method, I can usually tell when the needle moves from that point when I need to add a little.

I guess since I don't see any smoke, I'm not burning any!

Porsche usually states a minimal acceptable consumption rate below which they consider the engine "out of spec". So below 1000 miles/quart tells you something is wrong, and you seem to be at 500 miles/quart if your measurements are correct. How many miles are on the car?

You also said that you "left some small puddles at the dyno the other day". That sounds like a lot of leakage to me.

You won't see any smoke if the cat is in place and functional,....

If the engine is consuming a quart/800 miles, you are in need of new guides and maybe more. Without knowing anything about your car such as total mileage, its hard to say.

Its probably worth having a qualified professional remove the lower valve covers to see precisely how much sideplay is in the exhaust guides.

The car has 85K miles. Valves were just adjusted and new covers installed, my shop informed me that all looked good.

The cat has been removed.

I do have some pretty substantial leakage (in a couple of spots) so I will address that before anything else. I'll try to post some photos as I investigate.

Thanks for the replies

I am doing around 150 miles to .4 Litre on track, outside of that I am doing around 2000 miles per litre.

I have an 85,000 mile 993 that seems to use no oil ?

So there is a wide variance, but I agree that any leaks will cloud the issue. However, I was advised that unless they were a simple fix, small oil leaks were better left alone --- because they all do that sir !
