No A/C - Quick Fix
#31
Alfred, GermanAutoParts shipping is very inexpensive and very fast. I've always been amazed when my parts get delivered two days after order. Some items can be sourced cheaper from Pelican, but they are so far away and more expensive shipping so i pick and choose orders as such. Please respond with comments once you get things sorted out...or during because I'm (and many others probably) are in need of doing the same repairs.

Hi guys,
My AC stopped blowing cold air this week. I'm hoping it's a simple re-charge. The compressor engages properly and it appears the rest of the system functions normally shy of blowing cold air (I know, I know..) Anyway, like "bmohr" here, my compressor does not have the two colorful valves on the top, so I assume it's a replacement unit, it's a Denso (a black screw cap on the back facing out of engine compartment and one on the side facing the oil filter) so I'm not sure which is the low and which is the high side. I checked the records and found that the previous owner recharged the system 4 years ago in New Mexico, 5 months before I bought it. It's been blowing cold air up until this week. Do you think this may be a simple recharge job? Do these systems need periodic maintenance and re-fills?
Another interesting discovery I made is that the head unit in the cabin is the 993 unit, so this must have been replaced at some point too.
TIA for any help and opinions.... Much appreciated..
Chris

A few more observations this morning:
After starting car I noticed compressor kicked on immediately when AC switched on. Comp ran for 60 seconds then stopped for 5 seconds then re engaged for 30 seconds then stopped for 5 seconds, then re engaged for 30 seconds off 5 seconds on 30, off 5 etc. etc.
The compressor fan in the drivers front wheel well cycles on 5 seconds off 5 seconds, on 5 second off 5 seconds etc. etc.
It is cooler and dryer out today and I feel a slight cooling coming from the AC in the cabin, but nothing to write home about... definitely not cold
Thanks guys

See the previous posts about that ceramic resistor in the front wheel well, that was what was wrong when my condenser fan was doing the 5s on 5s off fandango. It was in about six pieces...

My A/C also could not hold freon more than 2 days. I try to fix in cheap way for one year. But no hope. Finally, have to order almost most expensive parts of the whole system for fixing last month. Used up my fortune.

Thank you all for your input and sage advise. I'm thinking I probably have a very slow leak in the system and that a recharge will hold for a while (hopefully...) I will look at the resistor and will see about having a pressure test done on the system. Looking at the schematic in Adrians book, it looks like the low pressure line is the one closet to the back of the car as it enters the compressor. I will assume the black screw cap on that nipple, facing back, is the test & fill valve.
Enjoy your Sunday....

That would make sense...the larger line accommodates low pressure.
I am in the middle of an entire re-do... evaporator, expansion valve, receiver/dryer, and compressor.
Steve W of Rennsport hooked me up with everything I need, as well as good advice. The Evaporator is difficult to do, (read Wachuko's DIY) but the rest is very straightforward.

no a/c
I think I had you beat here in Houston it was 98 ,,,, I went through the a/c bit and just put a charge on my car till the suction line was dripping water and that was it makeing real low temps now. Please do not nail me for the shadetree charging but working all summer just do not want to slug liquid to the comp when it gets cool outside. Ha that means in the mids 70s here

Of course, given the current heat wave, my C2 seems to have taken the opportnuity to join the crowd with it's a/c not putting out enough a/c. I've checked for compressor clutch actuation (good) and the condenser fan comes on as it should once the a/c button is depressed. I've checked the refrigerant level using one of the R134A gauges mentioned earlier in this thread, and it measures halfway into the green (sufficient refrigerant). Tried adding more refrigerant but the system wouldn't take it (I don't know what that means; there was refrigerant in the bottle). But the air coming out of the registers is only about 65 degrees, cool but hardly a/c. Has anyone with GOOD a/c measured the air temperature out of the registers using a kitchen thermometer? I'd appreciate something to compare mine to.

I read all the discussions regarding the a/c compressor not engaging.
I have the same problem and some 964 owners tell me that it's my CCU that is the problem.
Can this happen and how do I check this?
someone pls advice.
Thanks

If too low freon level, the compressor also will not engaging.
