Hopefully, I won't hurt anyone with this, but I've read that the 964s seem to be the most problematic of the 911s. DMF issues, diffs failing (C4s), etc. The prices on these also seem to be the lowest of the 911s. Is this due to the issues or poor reliability?
What years seems to have the least issues or the better reliability? I'd assume 1994 would be better since those are the last of the 964s.

Oh -- everybody knows '93's are best. ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
'89: an AWD 911? -- please.
Obvious Audi-envy distracts Porsche.
'90: first year for 911 air bags? All news to the contrary, decapitation rumors persist...
'91: never been in one of these. Can't say one way, or the other -- but why risk it.
'92: after 3 hard years of 964 production, entire factory goes on vacation. Mercedes fill-in workers grease pencil 3-point stars in unlikely places in every 911. Pass.
'93: The Heavens open, children laugh on their way to school, and Porsche workers pinch themselves daily for the excellence they see rolling down the 911 assembly line.
'94: factory secret: every '94 secretly used as a 993-program test mule.

i have to agree with the preference for 93 MY, as an example my car is really well constructed and free of problems (excluding some christmas tree issues

In the USA, the 1989 C4 was the only one available without Airbags. What this means is that you do not need to worry about a 20 year old airbag blowing your head off. Also, you can swap the steering wheel to whatever you like in 20 minutes or less. Finally there is more leg room since the lower dash is open like an old 911. The Airbag 964's have a huge lower dash cover, bum ashtray and cheap glovebox.

The 964 is no more or less reliable than any other 911. Like any car, if you buy one that's been properly loked after it will give you years of relatively trouble-free motoring. I've owned my 1990 Carrera 4 for four years now and have to say it is one of the most reliable cars I've owned - even though it's the oldest car I've owned. And I've got through about 30 cars in the last 26 years.
Proper care and attention is MUCH more important than what year the car was made in. Any faults with the earlier cars should have been addressed years ago and are now non-issues.
As far as I'm concerned the reason the value of the 964 is below the later 993 and in some cases the earlier 3.2, is because of dis-information -the belief that it is an unreliable model. Untrue. It is more complicated than the earlier models so it does nedd more care when being serviced and therefore servicing costs are slightly higher. But it is the last of the hand-built 911s, has a huge amount of character and offers a wonderful driving experience and in my view is a much better looking car than the 993 which is far pricier and in general terms no more reliable, and better looking than the 3.2 with it's squeezebox-bumpers.
So buy carefully and the rewards will be enormous.

Speaking of my car, I own a 93 RSA that has a 1990 engine swapped into it (long story). My 90 model engine is great. However, it has been rebuilt and had the head updates. Once the head updates are done on the early 964 engines, they are just as strong and reliable as the later 964 engines (in my amateur opinion).

It's good that you're asking questions, but you can over-analyze this decision to death. Every model has its strengths and weaknesses, and good points and bad.
Picking a particular car that has been maintained and cared for, is far more important than which series/model it happens to be.
That said, I think the best deals are in the 964 world. The later years might be marginally better, but I'd take a well-maintained '90 model over a neglected '93 any day.
