Default Heat Exchanger removal

Hi,

Is there a thread or a diy somewhere that explains how to remove the heat exchangers?

After a trackday I have some oil leaking onto the heat exchanger (towards the front of the car) which causes some pretty heavy smoke to come out of the wheel arches!!

So to investigate the cause i need to get underneath the car and remove the HE and fix it!!

Thanks

pretty simple in theory.
unclamp the cat from the crossover pipe. unclamp the heater ducting. unbolt the exhcangers.
13mm nuts and 8mm(?) allen. the allen head nuts are accessible through holes in the exchangers and the nuts are visible from underneath. to make the job easier, you should get a swivel socket.

Depending when your heat exchangers were taken off last (if any) could determine how difficult. If there is rust, use a good penetrating chemical. I had several studs break before the nut would come off. Made the job a lot harder.

You don't want to break one of the studs off. If they break off flush with the head surface, drilling them out is VERY difficult. I know from an earlier 911 I had. Try unscrewing them first but don't apply too much force. If they look rusty and don' t come off easily, I have found that the best approach is to have an oxygen acetelyene torch and heat each nut until it is red and then unscrew it.

Before you start taking the heat exchangers off have you tried Garrett's neat DIY on replacing the oil pressure seal?

https://rennlist.com/forums/diy-964-1989-1994-911/197900-replacing-the-oil-press-temp-sender-o-ring-the-hemi-manifoldectomy-technique.html

This was the cause of the oil smoke I used to get in the arches on trackdays and replacing the crappy old seal with the new design did the trick for me.

Hi guys,

I have bought the oil pressure seal and the lower valve cover seals (£31 all in) and am planning on tackling both jobs in the next couple of weeks.

There is so much smoke coming out after idling for a few minutes (when the HE's are hot) that its not driveable...

I am hoping to document my efforts and report back, thanks for all the advice.

Ade
