I looked up further info on your Becker, here.
Looks like it's an all-seeing, all-knowing magical mystery box!

Still don't completely understand how speedometer info helps the nav. computer (against, say, the usual GPS's accuracy.)
I thought it might be some kind of automated speed-compensating volume controller (boy, how I'd love to have THAT feature on my stock one-lung Porsche unit) - but, nope.

The speed pulse (which is optional - it will work okay without it) does two things.
First, it allows the speed-sensitive volume control to work, and secondly it means the sat-nav can keep track of you pretty well even if you're in a tunnel or the satellite signal is lost for a while for any reason. It means it can tell how close to the end of the tunnel you are, what the speed limit is right where you are, how close you are to a turn/junction - all that sort of thing.
