Last time I checked alignment (about 10.000 kms ago) it was OK.
Any ideas on how to check tires without having to buy new ones or using somebody else's????

MA7008O, keep us posted. I hear a slight whining noise in the morning when turning out of my driveway (left in particular). The car hasn't quite warmed up yet. After about 4-5 minutes of driving, it goes away. Sounds like it is coming from the rear. Tires are brand new and seem fine. Maybe it's time for an alignment.

OK, answered my own question. Not sure this is applicable to the OP, but my noise is coming from the power steering unit and according to the manual, it is normal! It states that at full lock, it is normal to hear "rubbing" sounds coming from the power steering. My PS fluid was low so I've filled it accordingly.

I'll go back to my first response....tires....it doesn't take much to make some really strange noises and impact on ride quality. If you are anywhere near the wear bars or there's any evidence of cupping or even if they are more than four years old, replace them. Did you check the condition of your axle boots?
If you listen to a perfectly fine 911 with a stethescope the bumping and grinding from the trans and chain noise will scare the living crap out of you...you'll wake up with cold sweats in the middle of the night, don't do it...
Andreas, good god man you need serious therapy, that motor is unnatural, that's very very wrong...in fact let me drop a car or two by your place and let you detail it, I hear it's good therapy indeed....

He indicated back in post #8
Which seems to remove the tires from question; I think.
there is a metallic noise that goes on and on as the car is idling with a gear on (wheels rotating on air).

...yes but how is the balance, runout or out of round on those tires? any one of which can cause related weird wobble and associated grinding noises...even with the wheels in the air!.... I'm just sayin check the simple stuff first...
