Default CD-2 Radio Repair

My CD player is not working. Its a factory Porsche CD-2 model radio. I really want to keep the original radio and am wondering if anyone knows what is the common failure or can recommend a reputable repair facility?

TIA

The Porsche CD-2 radio is manufactured by Alpine and I would suggest you contact them for technical support or search the net for it. I would doubt that parts for it are still available - or there is always e-bay.

Should Alpine no longer support the radio you can try one of the Porsche radios made by Becker. These people have been very helpful with me in the past:

I know you want to keep the original radio...but, switching to a CDR-220 from a 99 to 02 996 or Boxster is really the way to go. It looks great in the car...do a search as there are some pictures in other posts.

I switched this summer from my dying CD-2 to the CDR-220 and couldn't be happier. The sound is much improved.

If you are set on keeping the CD-2, you may be better off trying to find a used one on eBay or from a breaker.

Alpine is located in the Los Angeles area ... you can google them to get the number ... they have a repair shop ... you ship it to them/they fix it/ship it back ... IF it can be fixed. Good luck.

Upgrade to the CDR-220. It's expensive...roughly $400 or so once done (including the revised screen), but I haven't regretted it for a single second.

I've also got the iPod jack working on the CDR-220, which has been nice on long trips on the freeway.

+1 on CDR-220. Looks stock, and works much better than the older Alpine units. I got it from Becker http://www.beckerautosound.com/

Question

[Dang!] another slope to slide down...

OK -- before I get my skis all waxed for this -- this is a simple plug and play?
And so long as you get the disabling code, it's just a:
  • normal remove of the old chassis,
  • disconnect the plugs to old chassis,
  • plug them into the new -220 chassis,
  • slide the new chassis in till engaged-locked,
  • turn on,
  • feed in the code,
  • and listen to the tunes?
That simple, huh?

(My current stock CD skips from time to time.)

For Plug and Play I got a custom made adapter for the CDR-220 from http://www.swstereo.com/ for about $50.

and

"slide the new chassis in till engaged-locked" - this might take some time as it's a very tight fit.. Be prepared to spend some time under the dash in a rather uncomfortable position.
