"...and he says the stator diode is bad."
[on the inside:]
(...'stator diode'? -- what the frak is my stator diode?... no doubt sits on top of the clutch bell housing.)The stock air meter, or MAF [mass air flow?], is the attachment upstream of the air filter box and it has a plug that connects on the side hidden from view.
That plug's routinely disconnected when taking apart the intake system.
Thanks man. Forgot to mention that there is a popping sound at WOT as well. Being told that it's the spark plugs.
[on the outside:] "Ah, yes... the ol' stator diode..."

ok. described the symptoms over the phone to Bob Farmer (Indiana) and he said it sounds like the distributor belt is broken. Drop the car off to him and he opened up the distributor and sure enough it spun freely. How long should it take a tech to fix that belt? He said something like 5hrs. Hopefully this fixes it.
