Ok -I tried to upload some pics - but the file sizes are "too big". Is there a trick to shrinking the file sizes so the photos can be uploaded.

old-school cool...

Definitely one of those nostalgic, less-durable options that will become rarer and rarer to find (in it's as-came-with-car originality) as the years go by.
Like an original working radio in an early 356. (Or its original tonneau...)

I've always thought those were cool, but I'm not sure I understand the purpose of them. It doesn't provide theft protection. It doesn't protect against rain; I don't think. It seems more difficult to manage that the rag top.

Aside from the novelty and "cool" factor, is there a practical use for them?

Just curious.

Absolutely!! It snaps on/off in seconds - so everytime I go somewhere when the car is going to be sitting in the sun or elements I throw it on. Rather than putting the top up and down everytime and wearing out the motor - this is a great solution. Your right about theft protection - but it does deter punk kids from tossing a cig. butt into the car, or spilling a drink, or other stupid kid stuff. It is waterproof so if it does unexpectedly rain it keeps the interior dry.
