Default 964 Driving problems

Hello everyone on Rennlist Forums. This is my first post, after 2 months of 1991 (registered in 92) 964 C4 ownership.
My problem is that when driving, I cannot stop smiling as soon as the revs go much above 3000. It's as though there's another engine under there. It just takes off.
The evocative smell of burnt oil and leather and the sound in my right ear don't help either, and are just so addictive.
Is there a cure for this kind of thing?

PS on a serious note, I have suffered the indignity of having to get a push start while waiting to pick up my daughter a couple of weeks ago. I sat in the car for about 40 minutes, using the radio, electric windows and sunroof and had my phone on charge. Came to start it and -click- nothing! Normally starts first go. Is it normal for a 74 amp/hour battery to give up like that?

By the way, Rennlist is an amazing source of information - I'm learning all the time

Replace the batt with an optima dry cell. Long term its the best solution.

Nice post, nothing better than a 911

+1 on the optima. I had similar issues with my battery right after I got it. I replaced the Napa battery (top rated by consumer reports, fwiw) with a red top Optima. I've not had a moment's problem with it.

BTW, post some pictures or we will constantly refer to you as "that new guy with the dead battery" (TNGWTDB for short).

I'd better get some pics taken then!

Everyone over here seems to swear by a Bosch Silver 7HN, rather than the Optima, which don't seem widely available

I see youre location now. Shipping may be a bit much but the lifespan of the battery should cover the cost. Try FVD see what they have, maybe they have another drycell thats not sold here in the US?

Thanks for the advice, but no, we don't have FVD either. I'll get the battery tested to check its condition. If it's a power drain somewhere, that'll have to wait for the next service

FVD is a German Porsche parts place. They may well stock the Optima, you can try their website here

Thanks Jim, I hadn't seen this website. It looks pretty good, although mostly for LHD cars

Hi rebp911, Welcome to 964 ownership; feels great, doesn't it ?

I have the Bosch Silver 7HN, fitted by my mech. Been in for 18 months now and hasn't let me down for my DD 964. Will have to see if it stands the test of time.

Where are you in Beds.? I am in Leighton Buzzard. You don't happen to have a white cab. do you? Saw one in LB yesterday.

I replaced with the 7HN too. However your current battery might be OK if you fully charge it. Maybe it had run down a bit by standing too long before you bought the car and that time you spent using it's charge drained it.

Even with a new battery and no excessive current drains the battery will run down if say you leave it for more than 3 weeks without taking it for a good run. Later on Porsche introduced an automatic sleep mode (996 onwards) to stop the cars running the battery down while standing.

Personally I find it difficult to leave mine standing for long and frequent trackdays are wonderful for charging the battery up

A 7HN is £73 at Central Auto Supplies - 4 year warranty, seems like a good deal.
Boxsey911 - I do tend to use it for longer runs rather than a daily drive, but that day I had given it a good blast. I'll have to get it checked to see it's holding a charge.
Meek - I'm in Sharnbrook, and it's a '92 C4 Coupe like yours, Amazon Green with linen interior and just 54k. No a/c though, and they do seem to get a bit warm!
