Finally capitulated and took the car to Eurosport (the local race tuning specialist here in northwest Chicago). They performed the wiring harness TSB mentioned earlier in this thread and their work appears to have fixed it; when I inspected and re-seated the harness by myself, I didn't zip-tie it as shown in the diagram.

Moral of the story: save yourself $100 in labor by following this TSB completely and zip-tying the harness as shown.

In other news, they also spotted some significant oil leakage on the left side between cylinder heads. Not sure if this means it's the simpler stuff mentioned here or an actual call for a re-seal or full top end rebuild. Gonna get a second opinion for sure, especially after this rough idle debacle. Still, when that boxer purrs and howls as nicely as it did on the way home from the shop, it's easier to temporarily forgive and forget.

Mshobe,

Glad you've got it solved. Thanks for the pointers to the TSB. I'm in the Libertyville, IL area and would love to compare cars in person some time. I'm taking my car to Perfect Power tomorrow for an ride height and alignment adjustment after changing the springs and shocks this past weekend.

Yep, thanks again Oz. I only wish I could've claimed completion of the work myself!
