I think an aluminum LS6 engine is lighter than the Porsche engine.

Geoffrey ,

Who does the oil line adaptor ? I made my own but have never been totally happy !

When my 964 motor went smoky etc I replaced it with a 1997 993 Tip motor ,
with good low miles . No valve clearances , seals to bother with !
Used the 993 loom/ DME and the 964 exhaust system . Super conversion .

Thanks ,

Geoff

I believe the oil line adapter was a Porsche part, either from PMNA or from the dealer, I cannot remember which I bought mine from. It has the 993 o-ring and tab on one side and male threads on the other to connect with the 964 oil line. I think it has something to do with the replacement cases being 993 based, not 964 based.

You kept 964 exhaust with 993 motor? The 993 exhaust, especially modified or aftermarket would have been a much better play I would have thought.

David ,

Can you quantify the improvement by using a 993 exhaust ?

You may also check Smart Racing Products, I think they make one, but it might be AN fitting rather than stock Porsche, or they may have both. I've done it both ways.

Default 964 vs 993 exhaust?

David ,

Can you quantify the improvement by using a 993 exhaust ?

Geoff

Hi Guys,

I am very curious to any light shed on the subject too. I have looked into what seems like every opotion for an exhaust on the 964 . Initially it seemed like the 993 system was where the power was mostly made between the 964 to 993 engines. But of late more and more seem to feel that the 964 stock system is not all that bad. Any quantifiable results would be of great help. Is it Pcar legend that the 993 system makes more power or what? Especially with the cost and effort to convert to 993 exhaust. If the 20 or so hp can be gained and still have acceptable sound levels as well as pass emissions then its all good.

The 964 exhaust suffers from restriction in the back as the 4-5-6 bank crosses over to meet the 1-2-3 bank. It is also a single system where the 993 is separate bank-to-bank. Most 3.6l aftermarket headers are designed for a racing engine and are therefore, too large and do not operate as effectively at the lower RPM of a street engine. This is why you can see a minimal or negative power difference between a racing header and the stock exhaust on a stock engine. There are some header/heat exhanger systems that do provide additional power, B&B is one of them, although there have been some quality control issues. To give you an idea of how much power difference an exhaust system can make, the difference between RonCT's car and a blueprinted Cup car running cat bypass, primary and secondary bypasses is about 25rwhp on the same exact dyno that his car was tested on. You can take some away for the difference between a blueprinted engine and a stock engine, but you get the idea.

I was also thinking of the extra weight the additional plumbing the 964 enjoys.
I have no data but even if a draw on hp/tq the weight drop would be a bonus- but as I understand it, and as Geoffrey points out the Cup cars ran the least restrictive combo possible for a reason. It may very well be worse on the road at low rpm, but on the track (and dyno) there should be gains to be had.

Just my 2cents, I use the B&B 1.75" headers on the 993 engine in my C3 it's comparable to the stock 993 headers in performance but much easier to plumb in the 911 or 964 chassis.

I've mixed and matched 964, 993, 3.6 & 3.8 w/ that setup w/o any issues
