Default Sherlock Holmes time for UK rennlisters

There's a car in NZ that's been reshelled using a UK '92 Polar Silver 964 bodyshell that was recovered stolen. It doesn't have the VIN numbers so it can't be proven as clean title and therefore can't be registered for the road. Is there a way I can search UK records to find its VIN number? I figure there can't be that many '92 Polar Silver UK cars that have been deregistered.

Surely Porsche GB must know all the Polar Silver VINs for that year and then it shouldn't be too difficult to eliminate the ones known on the forums - here, Porsche club GB and their register, pistonheads, etc... I'd start there.

Is this car for you?

"It doesn't have the VIN numbers" ?
You have a shell with no VIN numbers on it ?

It's a frankencar. Ex Japan running gear and Ex UK bodyshell. The seller has the Japanese VIN, but not the UK body VIN [Probably removed to stop the shell being used to legitimise a stolen car in the future]. With a reserve of NZD 23k [USD 18.5k] it's dirt cheap for our market and since it shares my Turbo's body and interior colour I see it as a better fit for me than other buyers. It is a risk to buy, but this is something I'd have so little invested in that I could thrash it on a track day with no guilt whatsoever. I'm not in the same space with the Turbo 3.6, which I'm not sellling BTW.

The story is best told in the auction ad http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=144025774

Another option is to look on the body for hidden VIN numbers. Haven't got Adrian's book with me. Where are the hidden VIN references?

Search the car for production number data. The production number can be found on the front bonnet/hood/trunk lid inside windscreen end. This number is directly linked with the chassis plate vin, if you quote this number to Porsche you should be able to confirm the original vin. All sounds very very dodgy to me though.

Thanks, I'll ask the owner to do this, although I'm fast losing interest in the exercise, as the only real saving is funding costs when you figure that the car would never rise in relative value to a 'normal' 964. Also looking at the various parts I could use on my car shows it's relatively minor if I ever needed them.
