964 manual or tiptronic????

Assuming you've been driving a Boxster then I'd say a tip would suit you better...
Seriously though, unless you are going to use it for a lot of town driving, then go for the manual. Drive both and see which you prefer.

I just acquired a 964 tip out of Japan. In the UK at least its now just one large or rather sprawling town, that why I went for a Tip and have have to say I'm very impressed. In the semi-manual mode, which is basically like a clutchless gearbox you get proper engine breaking when changing down. Then in town bumbling mode, flick it over to drive and cruse. No DMF or clutch maintenance issues either

It's all based on your preference. I have a TIP, I DE it quite a lot, sometimes I wish for the extra gear, but other times when someone detonates their engine because of a mis-shift, I'm happy with what I have.
Also, once I am rolling, the TUTALOU doesn't lack in keeping up with the others.

I had a tip...didn't want one, but the car was so perfect I couldn't resist. I really enjoyed it. Living in LA it had is pluses as well. Could flog the crap out of it up on Mulholland or be sitting in traffic on the 405 and not be giving it a second thought. Reallly a nice choice for urban living.

I also was searching for a manual, then my tip came up for sale and being as it is an absolute peach condition wise,I could'nt resist.I have'nt regreted it one bit,no miss shifts, and a seemless surge of power when pressing on in tipptronic, then when in town,or just pooteling along slip in to auto and its very relaxing.
The ONLY down side,I sometimes miss the 5th gear. But hey its a 17 year old car!!!

Funny you should mention that. I think it was called the PDK system. A clutchless shifting mechanism....All the Porsche factory drivers loved it. It was fitted to a factory 962 and it actually won a race...in the wet w/Hans Stuck.
All proper race cars these days have a paddle or sequential. I can even remember Danny Sullivan picking the 996TT Tiptronic in a Turbo shoot out at Laguna Secca for Excellence Magazine.
Idea that a tip is for chicks is BS....its a great piece of engineering and works fantastic. I wish Porsche would come out with a proper paddle car, but you know Porsche....if it aint broke.....

LA964, Good one. That last point of yours is ripe for a humor-thread all its own:
2nd: "a factory-recognized leak/flywheel failure/snapped distributor belt"
3rd: "latently draining batteries like a sailor's wallet on shore leave"
" -- But you know Porsche... if it ain't [blank]... then don't fix it."
1st entry: "confounding our race fans to tears"2nd: "a factory-recognized leak/flywheel failure/snapped distributor belt"

Yes I'm aware of the Porsche Doppel Kupplung and I wasn't referring to the semi-automatic or full paddle shifted transmission. I was talking strictly about the Porsche Triptronic, hehehe.....c'mon we all know that Triptronic cars have their own will, and they don't respond when they should

Yes, just go look in last year's Pano about the racer that drove nothing but air-cooled tips (I'm at work so I don't have access to the issue or his name)
Edit:Pano, December 2004 - "The Art of Driving".....an interview with Rick Bye, and how he likes it on the track. Just Google his credentials!

Zico...you ever own a tip? Live w/it day to day....become "intimate" w/it? I don't know, I've never had a tip not do what I asked it to do....except when the relay for the anti-lock brakes came loose and stuck the car in D as opposed to M..the way I always drove it.
In this day and age and w/our cars, who cares or will really notice a 10th or two of a second here or there?
I removed my tip and put in a 996 LSD 6-speed box. Only because it was doubtful the tip could handle the power of the modded 993TT engine I stuck in the back.
