Can chrome D-90's be painted silver?
My son and I are looking at a 964 with chrome D-90's. A nice set of Cup I's is six months out so the D-90's will stay. Can chrome wheels be successfully painted silver or would we be wasting our time (and the Griots wheel paint kit?)
Thanks for your help!

You will have to rough the surface up, so the paint will stick. You can try a 600 then 1000 grit wet sand, and see if you are dulling the surface. If so, you may be ok. It will probably take a lot of work, since the chrome is so hard.
If you want your topcoat to last, then you will need to use a self-etching primer, before you put on color.

Jim, be sure that they are really chromed. I have not seen a set yet that really was chromed. The original D90s are aluminum and AL does not chrome. You can polish it to a fantastic finish that looks like chrome, but is really just polished AL. I polished mine and I have had multiple folks ask me about my "chrome D90s" If they are just polished and not chromed they will paint really well. You just have to do what wsybert mentioned: just sand and paint.

Don't bother, just sell them for the going rate for chrome D90's $100.00 for a set of four and purchase some factory painted D90's for the going rate of $200.00 for a set of four.

Don't expend the energy to paint those wheels if you are only going to replace them with a better set in 6 months. you will likely not have any lasting trying to paint chrome most paints wont adhere to it and when it starts to flake off it will look pretty crappy. I almost bought a 964 with chrome D90s and am glad that I did not. Those wheels looked awful and some of the chrome was flaking off in spots. The cup 1s will be a huge improvement if you can somehow swing it sooner you probavly won't regret it. Either way, Good Luck.

How about the thousands of Escalades and Navigators running around with chromed, factory, aluminum wheels?
To the original poster - I wouldn't waste the time trying to make paint adhere. Sell them and buy a better set.

Clean the chrome really well , use a cheap can of spray paint , if it lasts six months , great .
If it does not , use more cheap spray paint ?
When its time to sell them , clean the cheap paint off .
