Thanks for all of your kind messages chaps.

A poster on the pistonheads forum thinks the beam that runs across behind the bumper is actually the 'bumper beam' and is mounted to the chassis by a couple of shock absorbing mounts - this is what took most of the impact and I suspect will be the critical factor in determining if it is repairable or not.

If I am lucky is it normal to be able to choose my body shop? The guys that did all the paintwork earlier in the year impressed me and are local so that would be my preference.

Yes, you can always choose your own shop, no matter what the insurance company tell you or try to push you to do.

It might be worth contacting Ninemeister and talking to Marc who runs the bodyshop. I'm sure I've heard them say that cars that might look totalled at first glance can be straightened so that they are perfect again.

Sounds as if it may be "totaled" from an Insurance company point of view, but likely not "unrepairable". The ins. co. doesn't care from a "can it be fixed" point of view, they only care if the cost to do so would exceed the value of the fixed vehicle, based on their calculations.

Best of luck, James...I hope you don't have to begin the search anew. All the best.

Crap! What a bummer, James. I feel for you. That really sucks.

The most important thing as others have said, is that you're ok. Sorry, man.

Well that gives me confidence. If the insurance co repaired that I am sure they will do mine. Very similar looking impact except my bonnet (trunk) seemed to be untouched and still opened afterwards. One thing that I didn't realise is that there is a fan in the bumper. Is that where the a/c unit also sits?

BTW this is a dimly lit pic of the most obvious damage:

James,

Is that it? No other damage?

It doesn't look too bad at all. Should be repairable provided there is no extensive hidden damage.

Regards,

Well as always, I would say the best thing is that you are OK!

Do you have an LSD? I have found on several occasions that mine has saved me from embarassing (and more importantly dangerous) situations like this by making oversteer more predictable or manageable.....

Let us know how you get on - best of luck!

Well so fed up today as insurance company have "lost" the car. Seriously they don't know where it was recovered to despite the fact that they arranged recovery! Absolute clowns. Last thing I needed was that.

Assuming they find it in the morning I'm getting it recovered to the body shop I have used in the past and are very trustworthy. I'll start sleeping better again then!

Let’s hope for a better day tomorrow!

LSD = limited slip? How easy / expensive are they to fit?

Thanks again for all the kind posts

James

Lost the car FFS

Fitting an LSD would, I presume, involve splitting the gearbox casing as you'd do during a rebuild as it's a transaxel. Happy to stand corrected though.

The LSD in my 205 Mi16 made a great improvement, though not tried one in anything rwd (apart from a Gp4 Escort ).

Keep your chin up

Hi James,

Sorry to hear about this, I went through excatly the same almost a year ago to the day. I picked up my car on the Friday and paid just over £1000 for new suspension parts and then wrote the car off on the Sunday

I investigated the options of buying back and rebuilding and in the end I bought the car back but sold the wreck for a bit of a profit instead of having the work done myself. The car has now apparently been repaired and is back on the road for less than £5k so it can be done easily enough if you are happy to live with CAT D which in the end I wasn't.
